Weight Loss Before and After: I Lost 92 Pounds By Being Healthy And Active
I hadn’t always been heavy. In fact, I had lost 70 plus pounds twice before. My weakness was fast food. It was always so quick & tasted so good! It doesn’t take that long to put all that weight back on when you get lazy & forget good habits.
My doctor had told me for years that I should lose weight because my blood pressure was consistently high. I always thought that just happens to old people. I was only 36 at the time. So I continued to eat poorly & didn’t exercise at all. My doctor even prescribed blood pressure medication for me & said I should take the initiative to make some healthy changes.
That was my turning point. I finally decided that she was right; I had to do something to change my life. I thought to myself, “If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll get keep getting what you’re getting.” I was much too young to have a blood pressure problem; especially due to something I could control, like bad habits.
When I started my lifestyle changes, my cholesterol was 195. That was a pretty high number for a young person. My BMI was 33.3. I was considered obese. My situation was totally unacceptable. I was angry at myself for letting all these bad habits get so out of control.
I began to research what foods I should be eating to turn myself around. I discovered what proper portion sizes looked like. I was learning about fats, fiber, sugar, carbs & proteins. I threw away all the junk food, replaced it with whole wheat bread, skim milk, & lots of fruits & vegetables. I stopped going to fast food places & started walking on the treadmill that had been just sitting there.
The first 3 months were really hard. My body & mind were not used to this drastic change in lifestyle. I had an especially hard time with vegetables. But I kept going, making healthier food choices & walking every day. Eventually these changes began to get easier. I had found a routine & was feeling better about myself. The pounds were almost falling off!
One year later, I had lost 78 pounds. This was something I had done twice before, but this time was different. I had made permanent lifestyle changes that I could stick with for the rest of my life. Later, I discovered I really like jogging! Who knew jogging could be fun?! I’ve now lost a total of 92 pounds & am healthier than I have ever been! I take no medication, my blood pressure is great, cholesterol is a healthy 150, & my BMI is 18.1. I’ve kept it off for over 6 ½ years!
What works for me is a consistent routine: Oatmeal with fruit for breakfast, salad with chicken & vegetables for lunch, fish, chicken, or turkey for dinner, snacks of beans, vegetables, nuts, fruit, and nonfat yogurt. Before dining out, I check the menu online to determine healthy options. I also exercise most days, enjoying walking or jogging at the park.
I love to help & encourage my friends to eat healthier & become more active. Oftentimes they come to me for advice on food choices. It makes me happy knowing I can make a difference in someone’s life! I’ve been there & I’m never going back!
