Transformation Tuesday: Ups and downs of learning to live healthy
I was always the chubbier kid since elementary school, then I began working at McDonalds in grade 8. I met my boyfriend there and we began a relationship that was very food orientated, food was home, food was comfort, needless to say I packed on the pounds rapidly.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I began to hate myself, I only would wear sweatpants and hoodies to school so no one would see my belly. I got stretch marks all over my body, so ashamed of myself, of who I let myself become, which lead to eating more because food was what calmed my nerves.
I got bullied at school for being overweight and wearing the clothes that I did, would avoid school functions that you had to get dressed up for. I cried when I looked in the mirror , I stopped looking at myself because I was more confident if I could pretend I looked “better” than I did.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I went to the doctors one day about some cysts in my wrists and ankles, as they were starting to hurt alot when I put pressure on them. The doctor got me to step on the scale, after I begged her not to make me because I hadn’t checked in ages, living in denial of the fact that I had completely let myself go. I weighed in at 240, and immediately dropped and started bawling my eyes out… 240 pounds?!?! When did I let myself get to this.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
That same day at the doctors, I got home and tried on the pair of jeans I had fit prior to swapping to yoga pants and I couldn’t get them passed my knees. It was that same very day that I decided I needed to make a change for the better, that now is the prime time to get my health in check while my body responds quickly. I ordered a 30 day cleanse and completely stopped eating bad foods, I looked up how to lose weight and began to make a plan for myself.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started to lose weight within a few days of changing my eating habits. The body was responding, although I noticed my biggest change when I started to lift weights, my body formed into something I did not even know my body could make shapes like that!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I’d say my biggest challenge was the relationship I was in, as he was not supportive of me losing weight, always wanting to drag me back down. I had to think to myself “what is most important to me?” And that answer should always be ME! So I left him and took this journey on my own, to find the best version of myself.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
My sister was my biggest motivator, IS my biggest motivator. She’s an inspiration, always pushing me to be the best me, to reach my full potential. Never have I wanted to give up, that idea of who I wanted to be has changed, but I’ve always been reaching for that confidence in myself.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost the first 100 pounds in the first year and a half, then lost more till I reached a total of 115lbs. I then began to work more on gaining muscle, gaining control of my body, eating a larger amount of healthier foods and am now sitting at 45 lbs heavier
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Oh all of my victories were non scale! The scale is no longer my worst nightmare because I dont care what that number is. I feel free! I feel happy, I have energy, control over my body, control over my mind, I look in the mirror and LOVE who I see. Self love, thats the biggest victory of them all
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I ate horribly. I ate thousands of calories a day, none of which were nutritious. I ate when I was sad, I ate when I was happy, I ate when I wasn’t even hungry. Fast food, anything greasy, anything sugary. I shouldn’t have been surprised that much weight realistically, but when you’re in that mindset, the thought of how your body is processing this food doesn’t cross your mind.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was very overweight, I did not exercise. As I was losing weight, I was just doing cardio because I had this idea that lifting weights would make me “manly” which I now think back and laugh at my silly old self because this machine I have now did not come over night, these muscles take blood sweat and tears, hard work and daily intense, heavy lifting! I now workout 6-7 days a week, training a couple hours everyday with very little cardio.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I hated water before, could not drink it, adding BCAAs into my water turns it into juice! Keeps me hydrated and keeps my tastebuds happy 🙂
- SLEEP SCHEDULE! I cannot say this enough, my body changed so much as soon as I started going to bed early and waking up early.
- Routine!!!! Get in habits of things, make gym something you do as a part of your schedule, having routine has literally saved my life as far as weightloss. I no longer feel like I need to think about it, it’s just become a part of my life.
- I eat the same thing for breakfast and lunches mostly everyday, I find that easier, same thing as not having to think about what I’m eating.
