WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I’ve struggled with weight issues since I was 16 and endured eating disorders and fad diets since then.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was always self conscious about my body. I would avoid certain events like pool parties. If I attended I would either “forget my suit” or sneak in when no one was looking. I would change in a bathroom stall to avoid being seen in any locker room or even a friend’s house. I was so afraid to be seen that at sleepovers I would just wash my hair over the tub because I was afraid someone would walk in and see me naked.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
When my mom passed away at a fairly young age of health issues I knew I needed to get serious. I knew I needed to change my outlook about food and exercise. I needed to worry about being healthy vs being skinny. As my daughter got older I realized I needed to be a good role model for her and to want to work out and be healthy and not hate your body. I wanted her to have a positive body image. I wanted my son to know that exercise is a normal everyday thing
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started with at home workout DVDs. I would workout at 10pm after everyone was in bed and everything was taken care of. Once I was able to switch my schedule I would go to the gym directly after work. I saw a trainer for a year, feel in love with working out and have since been back to working out at home. It’s really about making it a priority and scheduling time for yourself. I struggled with this because I felt selfish taking time for myself. Now I know it mashed me a better person and I’m inspiring my kids.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I found the best way to track results is with a tape measure not a scale. And how your clothes fit. I think 4 weeks into a solid routine I started to notice a difference. Not concentrating on that scale is a hard thing to accept.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I lacked focus. I wanted to lose weight but didn’t want to do the work. I overcame laziness. I overcame focusing on how much I had to do vs how much I had done. I struggled with diet pills, hiding what I was eating, anorexia, binge eating and just being ashamed of eating and my body in general.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Of course! In the middle of every workout I wanted to give up. It’s hard. Whenever I was faced with cake, brownies, cookies, I wanted to give up. But I knew if I have up I would have to start all over again and I had worked so hard. I knew if I gave up, I was teaching my kids bad habits. But I did give up and start over numerous times. It wasn’t until my mom passed almost 2 years again that I committed to getting healthy and stuck with it. Changing my perspective.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes of course. Those are frustrating but natural. I would change up my workout and nutrition and concentrate on the progress I had made. I tried to do a lot of positive self talk, telling myself not to give up and don’t worry. I was just trying to get healthy. Once you can look at it that way, I think it makes everything easier to deal with.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I’ve changed my outlook and perspective over the past two years. I’d say it took a year to be happy with what I’ve seen. 3 months in I could notice a difference and so could others around me
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
The way my clothes fit for one. And the fact that I don’t hide from a camera now. I feel better about myself when shopping. The way I feel and have more energy. I can walk into a room and not want to hide under a coat.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat real food now. Healthy food, more veggies and protein. I want to fuel my body with good natural food. I eat a lot if eggs, veggies, protein, fruit and some carbs. It’s no more fast food to just eat. It’s what can I give my body to give me energy. I eat to live.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I’m able to have more energy and keep up with my kids. I can play tag and not have to sit out. I can stay up later and get up earlier feeling refreshed.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Don’t give up on yourself so easily. You didn’t gain the weight overnight so it’s not going to come off overnight.
- Be patient with yourself. Don’t concentrate on how far you have to go, but how far you’ve come.
- Drink lots of water. It takes practice but the more you drink it the more you’ll want to.
- Make yourself a priority. You are not being selfish by taking a hour for yourself. You are bettering yourself and there shouldn’t be any guilt in that.
- Fad diets, pills, wraps do not work. Good old exercise and eating right are the only thing you need. Took me a long time to accept that. Find a program or sport that you love, get a support group or friend. Do what ultimately makes you happy. Change your outlook to getting skinny to getting healthy.
