I have struggled with being overweight my entire life. I went through some traumatic experiences at a young age and turned to food for comfort.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
In grade school I would get into fights because kids would call me fat. As a teenager I was self-conscious about my body image because I had to buy women’s plus size clothing, which at the time, there wasn’t cute plus size clothes, so I would often wear men’s t-shirts.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
My family and I went on a trip to Disneyland in December 2013. We walked 10 miles each day we were there. To my surprise, I did not have any pain. Something clicked. I knew from that point I needed to get moving to relieve my pain and lose the weight. I had walked before but never to that extent. I knew I had to push past the pain and the weight would come off.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started by working out with a friend at her house doing a cardio based home workout. We completed several home workout programs through Beachbody and we eventually started a weight training program called Body Beast. That’s when I found my passion for weight lifting. I also started to research food and the way it affects the body so I learned about cleaned eating. Clean eating opened up a whole new avenue of energy and changed my entire view on packaged food.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started seeing results about a month after I began and within the first few months I lost over 30 pounds.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had to overcome a lot of doubt. It was a huge mental struggle. I used to say “I can’t” because I lacked belief in myself. I was in a lot of pain but I knew the pain of being overweight was far worse than the pain of exercising. I also didn’t have a whole lot of family support in the beginning because I was the only one in my house who was ready for a lifestyle change.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I’ve wanted to give up more times than I’d like to admit but what has kept my going is being able to be there for my kids, wanting to be the best person and role model I can be. I want to show them that anything is possible.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I’ve hit many weight loss plateaus and even gained weight back at times. It’s not always a straight path so I try not to focus on the scale and focus more on how I feel and my clothes fit.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost most of my weight during the first and second year of my fitness journey.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I do have a lot of non-scale victories. From smaller clothing sizes, to hitting personal records in weight training, and running pace.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was heavier, I would eat a lot of junk food. Mainly snacks, sweets, chips, fried foods, and highly processed packaged food.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My physical activities now are pretty extreme compared to when I was heavier. Initially working was a huge physical struggle do to my weight I had to modify almost every exercise because I wasn’t able to support my own body weight. My favorite exercises is weight training.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. You won’t always want to workout, do it anyways!
  2. Meal prep and eat simple whole food.
  3. Eat on a time schedule.
  4. Don’t compare yourself to others.
  5. Push past your limits.
