WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
As a child I was always a little bit porky but the weight really started to pile on around age 11 and I just kept getting bigger and bigger.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
As I was in school during my heaviest days I was bullied about my size a lot. People would call me ‘whale’ and take my food from me at lunch. Obviously, I wasn’t at all fit and I panicked every time we had to do sport in school.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
Once I reached a BMI of over 40 meaning I was morbidly obese I knew enough was enough and if I wanted a productive future I would have to sort this out and get fit.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started by eating smaller portions and doing the occasional exercise video. I was too ashamed to go to the gym, the pool or an exercise class.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
A week after starting I felt like giving up but once I got on the scale and saw I had lost 7lb I decided to keep at it. After a few weeks my clothes didn’t fit and I noticed operation scars changing shape so I knew it was going well.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Not eating junk food. 24/7 was hard. I used to comfort eat; it was a way to fill the hole whenever I was sad or angry. Soon I found new outlooks though such as dance.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes, I often wanted to give up. I continued because I kept thinking why waste all the efforts I put in so far?
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took about a year for me to get from a morbidly obese weight to an ideal weight.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I went down from a dress size 26 to a 10. I hadn’t been that small since about age 8!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I can’t eat as much anymore even if I try! I used to be able to eat a hole pizza and half of someone else’s. Now I can barely manage half!
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I did absolutely nothing physical when I was heavy. Now I exercise every day whether it be: swimming, dancing, walking, running, aerobic classes or cycling not just to lose weight but because I actually enjoy if now!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Don’t make it all about yourself: do something for charity. I swam the equivalent of the English Channel; instead of being motivated to keep going for weight loss I was motivated because I wanted to earn money for a worthy cause.
- Put juices in the freezer and turn them into popsicles. Healthier than usual ones and good for a snack.
