I started having weight issues when I began puberty. I was an early bloomer and my weight also started to increase. I struggled all during my teen years.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?  I was never a popular girl who dated. I enjoyed school and my friends but no dating for me . I did marry and have a beautiful son. After doing so I never was able to loss the weight until just recently. In my third marriage my health finally took a toll on me.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?  I was no longer able to work because of my weight. My health was deteriorating and my quality of like was almost gone. When I could no longer bathe myself without help I knew something had to be done.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?  I was talking with my mother and she said she had seen information on Bariatric surgery being done in our area. After going on line and watching the tutorial I made an appointment and went yo see them. I signed my paper work and started my journey in March, 2014.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?  I started on a low fat diet and began to see results. When I started on my pre op diet my weight loss jumped into high gear.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?  My dislike for vegetables was a high hurdle for me. Money of course was an issue. Being on disabilty gave me the resource to pay for my surgery. Money was tight but I paid for the high costs for the pre op suppliments needed.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?  Giving up was never an option. I was determined to get healthy and have a second chance at life. Knowing my son was getting married gave me a goal to be able to see him marry his lovely fiancé.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?  Yes I have hit some plateaus. When this has happened I have just kept on going to reach my goals. Remembering all that I have learned gives me the strength I need to succeed.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?  I am eleven months post op and have lost the bulk of my weight since surgery in November2014.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?  My greatest NSV is that I can shower, dress myself and tie my shoes by myself without any help. Getting my driver licenses back was the best feeling. When my son got married I was able to be there and to also go on a family vacation to Myrtle Beach and wear a bathing suit for the first time in 12 years!

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?  My daily food is nothing like it was before. I know enjoy a high protein shake or yogurt with fruit for breakfast. Lunch is usually protein like tuna or chicken with some type of veggies and then a small piece of cheese. Snacks are now string cheese or a small piece of fruit. Dinner is a chicken breast or other lean protein with some steamed or grilled veggies. A small bit of starch like brown rice or a sweet potato.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?  My activity level has improved. I can walk more than before and no longer have to stop and catch my breath. I can actually do exercises that are not to strenuous.


  1. Water is your best friend. Drink all you can and then drink some more.
  2. Pay attention to the information you are given to be the best informed you can be at eating healthy. Use all the tools you are given and you will succeed.
  3. Don’t give in to the old habits that got you unhealthy in the first place.
  4. If you stumble don’t give up. We are human. Pick yourself up and keep on going.
  5. Remember that you deserve to be the best you can be. Love yourself above everything else and you will reach your goals.
