Also, it’s common to store excess fat around the middle as you get older. “To lose it, you need core work–especially Pilates-based moves–to pull in those abs and enough cardio to shed unwanted fat.”
A self-described exercise loather, Ettinger was especially nervous that she wouldn’t be cut out for the Reshape Your Body Plan. In the end, she learned to “actually look forward to” walking, though she may never learn to adore strength training.
“The cardio plan was so much easier than I thought it would be. The walking workouts have increased my stamina, so I can put in more hours at my ceramics studio, and it improves my mood tremendously,” says Ettinger. “I do the strength training just once or twice a week–less than I should because I still find core work uncomfortable. Although I complain the whole time I’m doing the moves, deep down I’m just glad they work–and thankful they don’t take too long!”
Food Tip “I used to start the day with tea and a piece of toast with jam, but I was always starving by midmorning,” she says. “Eating protein with every meal has saved me. Now I make sure to have some protein, like yogurt. I’m not nearly as ravenous now. That’s unprecedented.”
