WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
When I went into grade 10, I noticed food starting to stick to my body in a different way. I was an extremely active athlete, and yet I still wasn’t able to keep my stomach slim and avoid cellulite.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was really worried about Prom when it was time to buy a dress. I had to get my gown tailored a size bigger. I had never before realized how uncomfortable it was to have the fact you’ve gained weight pointed out to you so blatantly.
My arms were really exposed, and I had never liked showing them since I had gotten a little heavier.
I was worried all summer long about wearing shorts and bathing suits. No one ever made fun of me for my little belly, but I did. I didn’t enjoy seeing that “before” photo for the first time.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
When I entered college, I was so nervous about the way I looked I didn’t even want to go. I thought the best way to lose the weight was to stop eating… Big mistake. I ran out of energy and motivation for quickly. Like, within a week. No way is that an appropriate way to treat your body.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I knew things had to get better, so I turned to Pinterest and did every workout I found going through the fitness section. At-home workouts are fantastic for beginning a fitness journey!
I had a long talk with my mom and we decided to start eating new things like “super foods” and drinking smoothies. We would cook different and healthy new meals and prep our lunches to stay full all day.
I also decided to start loving myself. Once I figured out that no one would ever be able to really love me, until I learned to love myself, I was really motivated to change and get fit… For myself!
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started seeing and FEELING difference very quickly. I noticed my digestion rate increase and my stomach start to flatten.
I think the most important result I saw was how quickly I started feeling Possitive and happy again.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Since I was an athlete for so long, being reconnected with training was amazing. I didn’t have many challenges and had a lot of support.
After starting to workout on my own again, I actually had the confidence to join a basketball team.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I did give up, at one point for about a month. I rebounded and was not happy.
I went away with family and friends for a while and just drank and ate to my hearts content. It was an amazing experience but I came home bloated and unhappy.
It took so much out of me to get back in a routine that was consitant and that step back is actually a huge motivation as why I am where I am now.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit 1 plateau when trying to loose weight.
What I decided to do was cut out lactose and gluten from my diet. Within days I noticed the final few inches melt away from my body.
My mom had been celiac for years and so the transition was simple for me. Gluten free and lactose free foods were a common thing in my household.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took me the better part of 5 months. Training 5-6 times a week, at home or at the gym. Also playing basketball 4 x a week.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I actually never used a scale the whole time I was loosing weight. My goal was to be a size small. I didn’t want to concern myself with a number on a scale, and I also didn’t have one.
I had a lot of non scale victories because I concentrated on exposing myself to new things and facing them head on. I did 505 jumps with a skipping rope in 5 minutes. I concluded that an awesome feat!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am now vegetarian, so my diet used to be drastically different.
The amount of ice cream I ate and the cholesterol and fat I was getting from animal products wasn’t doing me good.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was actually a lot more physical when I was heavier, because I wasn’t watching at all what I was eating.
When I was heavier I was playing 40+ hours of basketball a well, but my diet didn’t reflect the body I wanted at that time.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Stay Possitive: you and your life are beautiful. Even if you can’t see it right now, underneath it all you are flower waiting to blossom into something amazing.
- Drink water: more important than a good diet is hydration. Don’t concern yourself with pre workout and juices and BCAAs. When training never deprive yourself of the goodness of h2O.
- Interval training: To take most advantage of training sessions make your 45-60 second rest time between sets active by using a skipping rope or a step-up.
