Junior High is when I look back and most prominently remember thinking I was heavier. The weight just continued to spiral out of control the older I got. I think it started because I would turn to food as a source of comfort instead of as fuel for my body.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? I HATED shopping. A girls dream turned nightmare for me. I hated going out to buy clothes because I already knew they wouldn’t fit. Living life in a 3 to 4X clothes wasn’t the life I wanted to continue to live. I struggled with my body image and was extremely self conscious about the way I looked. I hated going out with friends just for the fact I didn’t want to not be wearing the cute things my friends would be wearing because of my excessive weight.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? I think everyone in their weight loss journey has a moment where it “hit you like a ton a bricks” that you needed to change the way you were living. For me it was my doctor telling me just how morbidly obese I was.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I did all the diets under the sun, had multiple personal trainers, was put on medication to try and decrease my diet… nothing was working for me. Years of multiple attempts to lose the weight and proving I was going to work hard to fight for my life back, my doctor suggested I look into bariatric surgery. Honestly I thought like most on the fact its the “cheating” way to lose the weight you needed to…but was I wrong. Bariatric surgery is just a ‘tool’ to help you lose weight. Your stomach shrinks and changes..your brain does not.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? I will be post op 1 year in the very beginning of march. And I’m down 110 pounds.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? I was developing heart issues due to the weight and wanted a change. The reason I qualified for the surgery was because of my high pulse and high blood pressure. The whole process was very challenging but so rewarding.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? every time I purchase clothes in a smaller size I’m motivated even harder to push towards my goal weight! Everyone has days of doubt in their weight loss journey. But remembering why and where you started should be all the push you need!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? Hitting plateaus happens! Weight loss is not a steady downhill slope. Some weeks you might lose a couple pounds. One week you might stay where you are at. Its so important to focus on how far you have come to get you through the tough plateaus…and increase your water intake!!
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? Around a year! But I’m not at my end goal yet! I would like to lose around 30 more pounds.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Too many to name!! But I enjoy shopping now! It’s not a chore to go out a pick out clothes for myself. NO more plus sizes!!
Also my stomach doesn’t touch my steering wheel anymore when I drive woohoo!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I was most definitely a emotional eater. I looked at food to help solve my problems instead of going for a run and burning off the things bothering me. I would turn to fast food because indeed it was most certainly faster. I never hated vegetables and healthy options I just didn’t want to take the time to cook and meal prep.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I exercised before I had bariatric surgery. I just wasn’t fully motivated. After surgery you sort of kick yourself into high gear. To be successful with weight loss surgery exercise is a must! My favorite is for sure cardio. Although to not retain so much extra skin weight training is very important.
HOW DID YOUR EATING HABITS CHANGE? Meal prep is what honestly keeps me on track. If I wasn’t to grill chicken breast and veggies I would turn to the old habits! …aka running to Chick-fil-a instead! I’m big on having an assortment of foods for my meal preps though. I think why I struggled so much before is because I wasn’t taking the time I needed to plan my meals ahead of time and was fearful of eating the same thing over and over.

This journey taught me just how strong I am. I would have never thought my life would be like this a year ago… but man am I glad I’m not where I was then. Bariatric surgery has changed my life in more ways than one.
