My weightloss success story
My name is Denise, and I decided to turn my life around when I reached my highest weight ever of 234 lbs. Growing up I always maintained a healthy weight and being tall (5 ‘7”) always helped me look slim but shortly after getting married my weight started to climb. With bad eating habits, no physical activity and 2 pregnancies I had piled on about 80 lbs. I had attempted many fad diets but soon after losing some weight I’d stop and would gain back every pound and some.
It was in early 2005 that my husband was diagnosed with high cholesterol and we both decided to change our eating habits and began to exercise. I didn’t want to try another “temporary diet” so I decided to educate myself on nutrition/weight loss via internet as well as advice and tips from nutritionists and dieticians. I learned many things, among which included, portion control & counting calories but the most important thing I learned and which was the key to my success was: “a diet is not a temporary solution to weight loss but rather a permanent lifestyle“. I had to change my eating habits for good.
I also incorporated in physical activity. I started walking 15-20 minutes a day, 6 days a week, gradually increasing the time every week or so and the intensity of the activity. I started off walking and gradually began jogging. I started to see the weight come off very quickly. I lost 35 lbs in 3 ½ months until it suddenly stopped. I cut back some more on calories and exercised longer but that didn’t help. I didn’t want to quit or get discouraged so I decided to keep searching the internet for ways to overcome the halt. I learned that I had hit a plateau and that by cutting too many calories my metabolism enters into starvation mode. The solution to getting past the plateau was to change my exercise routine. The body will adapt to any routine after 6 weeks and you have to change the workout; I incorporated in strength training 3 times a week. I was eating right, doing cardio exercise but I also needed to build some muscle to rev up my metabolism.
I decided to join a gym and started weight lifting and shortly after doing so the weight started to quickly come off again. Not only did it help me lose more weight but it defined and toned my body. I have lost 45 lbs since lifting weights in 4 months. That is a total of 90 lbs. in over 10 months. I currently weigh 144 lbs. and dropped from a size 18/20 to a more slimming 6/7, my BMI dropped from 36.6 (obese) to 23.3 (normal) but more importantly my risk for developing diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease was tremendously reduced by 80%.
My husband also lost 25 lbs and reduced his bad cholesterol levels. We’re much more active, have a lot of energy and we feel great. I now say that persistence is the key to achieving any goal. I know it, because it worked for me!
