How I Lost over half my weight but gained so much more!
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I really started gaining weight when I was in elementary school. My Father was abusive towards my mother along with me and my sisters. Whenever something bad would happen I would run to the fridge and eat whatever snacks I could find and kinda was my way of fighting back because they were his snacks. So in my mind that’s how I dealt with things by turning to food .

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight was affecting everything. I had gotten married in 2014 and had hoped to start our family right away. I had stopped birth control and I never had my menstrual cycle for over a year and a half due to me being so overweight. It was affecting my job as I’m a hairdresser and I stand on my feet all day. It was getting so bad when I would come home from work I could barely crawl out of my car to my front door that’s how much pain my body would be in.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I was having nerve problems in my legs and was in such excruciating pain nothing I would do would help me. I went to an orthopedic dr and basically told me he didn’t know why no one had told me what my problem was my weight . That he couldn’t do anything and proceeded to push my hip with his finger, made me feel like the Pillsbury dough boy, saying that’s why I’m having problems with the nerve there .
That he sees this problem with people that are overweight or construction workers that wear there pants too tight. I wasn’t even in the room with him 10 minutes and that was that and I just remember keeping calm trying not to cry. I came home and my husband had asked me what did he say and I just burst out into tears. I had felt so awful and felt like I had hit rock bottom and I was in so much pain and knowing It was all because of my weight made me even more determined to get my life back.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I was recommended by a friend to a local bariatric center that her mother in law had used. It was one of the best decisions of my life. They helped me every step of the way with my journey to a healthier me

I saw results after the first month. It was amazing just seeing the progress after surgery and then when I started working out.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Not everyone is going to be happy for you and your journey, I did lose some friends but I have to say my husband and family have been nothing but supportive the whole step of the way of my journey along with my friends and coworkers!
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
The beginning was a little rough and hard but I kept thinking of my goals of me wanting to start our family and being able to work and enjoy life again. Also buying new clothes is one of my favorite NSV too!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Oh yea definitely! It’s normal whether your losing weight naturally or with bariatric surgery. I would push myself a little more at the gym or I would play around with my macros because sometimes you have to change it up
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I’ve lost my weight in a year and 2 months about
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
So fitting in a booth was a major one for me. I used to cringe going to restaurants or diners because of the dreaded booth. One day we went to the diner to eat and my husband asked me what do I want booth or table and of course I was like table. They ended up sitting us at a booth and I remember thinking great now I’m gonna be embarrassed because I can’t fit in this booth. Not only did I fit in that booth but I had room to spare! My husband knew right away too and had the biggest smile on his face when he saw me fit in the booth
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I would skip breakfast and than I would eat whatever for lunch thinking that was ok since I didn’t eat breakfast. I drank soda and orange juice all day long and basically never really cooked for myself so I always had takeout
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
after surgery I literally would just walk. It was January and My husband and I would just walk up and down our street. Eventually I was able to do a little more and more. Then we would walk around the neighborhood and once I really got into it we started going to a nearby reservation and would walk there. 3 months after my surgery I joined my local ymca because I wanted to do water aerobics and it’s literally my favorite workout! Makes me feel like a mermaid!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I found different ways to eat the things I used to love. I make these protein cream cheese bites in a skull silicone tray and that’s my daily treat! My husband loves them too.
- I would leave my gym bag in the car so if I was on my way home from work I would head straight to the gym because once I got home I wouldn’t want to go or I would convince myself I was too tired to workout .
- Find an accountabilabuddy! Someone to keep you on your toes and help you keep your eye on your prize!
- I try to meal prep the night before and have my lunch bag all ready for me to grab and go in the morning
- The minute I wake up I start drinking my water right away! Before I leave for work I’ve already drank two bottles of water because dehydration is no joke.
