Losing Weight for Better Health
Patience and hard work helped Badbombur lose 150lbs. 18 months ago he received a wake-up call from his doctor regarding his high blood pressure. At almost 40, Badbombur knew it was time to make a change with his lifestyle. He has been maintaining his weight since last December and couldn’t be any happier.
1. What made you decide to lose weight this time? Did you have an “Aha!” moment?
No real moment, the doctor threatened to put me on high blood pressure medicine. I was going to turn 40 that year and decided it was time to make a change. So I arranged to visit a Dietitian and started using Calorie Count that very day. I wish I new what the “Aha!” moment was that made me decide this time to lose weight. I wish I would have had that moment when I was 25 or 30 or 35.
2. What other “diets” (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?
No serious or formal programs like this time. When I had success losing weight before it was because of an increase in activity level, either through exercise or work.
3. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?
Everything. Before I was eating chicken wings three times a week, pizza at least once a week. Eating heavy dinners a couple times a week and fast food nearly every day for lunch. Now it is all about fruits, vegetables, lean meats and healthy carbs. I started exercising about a month into the change and continued with 4-6 hours of cardio a week. The start of this year I began running, which I have found I enjoy. As far as my attitude, nothing has really changed in my life. I feel better about myself, but I am prone to say nothing has changed in my life except I had to buy a new wardrobe.
4. How did Calorie Count help you to lose weight?
Couldn’t have done it without the site. Logging your food makes all the difference in the world, it allows you to see where you are at and where you need to be to get where you want to go.
5. What was most challenging about losing weight?
Dragging myself to the gym four or five times a week. I didn’t like exercising.
6. How long did it take you to see results?
I lost 11 pounds the first two weeks which really energized me and shocked me at the same time!
7. When did you realize that you were a success?
About 4 months in I realized that I would do this, and that it was just a matter of time.
8. How do you prevent relapse?
I am still working on that. Maintaining seems to be harder than losing, because you don’t get that positive feedback at the scales week after week watching the number fall.
9. How has your life changed now that you’ve lost weight?
I had to buy new clothes, my blood pressure is great, my health has improved. No more blood pressure medicine!
10. What five tips do you have for other dieters?
- Log everything.
- Discouragement is part of the process, deal with it.
- See a Dietitian, professional help is key. This site provides a great supplement to professional advice, but we are all different and a Dietitian can provide individualized programs.
- Don’t try to lose too much too fast, realize that this is a long term process. I looked at it like when I went back to graduate school: it will take a couple years, but it will be worth it in the long run.
- Be diligent. If I can do this, anyone can!
