Losing 51 Pounds for Better Health

1. What prompted you to begin this weight loss journey? Did you have an “Aha!” moment?

I had lost 20 pounds the year before and then gained about 12 of it back. I had been having problems with my blood pressure and cholesterol. I had developed glucose intolerance (borderline diabetes). For several months I had been having elevated liver enzymes and having problems with nausea and vomiting. I had gone to a gastroenterologist who told me I had fatty liver from my weight and had a hiatal hernia you could drive a truck through. She wanted to do surgery, but I knew it was a difficult surgery that often did not work. I also knew all my health problems were coming from my weight. I suddenly realized I was eating myself to death. I really came to terms with how I was abusing my body.

2. What other “diets” (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?

I have dieted off and on all my life. I had tried high protein and low fat and everything else you can think of. I almost always lost some weight and then I would go back to my bad eating habits and just gain it all back. I just decided it was time to quit dieting and change my life style. I was going to have to do something that I could do for the rest of my life or just figure on having a much shorter life.

3. Please describe how you reached your weight loss goal. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?  Did you implement any other strategies besides Calorie Count?  What was the most important change?

I actually did not start Calorie Count until this year. At first I just sort of eliminated all white flour and rice and pasta. I started eating all whole grains and cut out anything with added sugar. I tried eating low fat dairy, lean meats and lots and lots of fruit and vegetables. I drank a lot of water and started walking doing water aerobics at a local gym.

4. Please describe how Calorie Count was instrumental to your weight loss.

I did great the first year I did all my changes. I lost 23lb that first year. Then the whole next year I only lost 4 lbs. I got depressed because I still had 13 pounds to go and just couldn’t seem to budge it anymore at all. When I started Calorie Count I started measuring and logging everything I ate. I had never realized how much over my portions were. The analysis feature really let me take a new look at a lot of the food I was eating. It made a world of difference. When I started logging my loss was very consistent. Not fast, but consistent. Since I met my goal a couple of months ago, I quit logging every day. However, I still weigh at least once a week and anytime I go up two pounds I start logging again and it comes right back off. I have met so many really great people on CC and got such wonderful support and help. I wish I had been on Calorie Count all along. I think my weight would have come off much faster than it did.

5. What difficulties did you experience losing weight?

The second year I was losing I had only lost 4 pounds. It was very discouraging.

6. How long did it take you to see results? When did you realize that you were a success?

As soon as I started logging I started seeing results. I measured and weighed my food and realized I had been eating much more than I realized.

7. How do you prevent relapse?

I still weigh every week and any time I go up I start logging again. I know this is a life style so I still eat the way I was eating before I just added more calories. A couple of times a month I eat things that I don’t usually eat like pizza or fried oysters.

8. How has your life changed now that you’ve lost weight?

I feel so much better. I actually like to exercise and miss it when I don’t get to go for several days. I love wearing small clothes and being normal. I had been overweight for so many years. I am so much healthier. My blood sugar, my cholesterol and liver are all normal now. I still take blood pressure medication, but at a much smaller dose and it is staying well controlled. I no longer have problems with my Hiatal hernia.

9. How long have you maintained your current weight?

I hit my goat weight May 26, 2012. I have been going between 121 and 124 since.

10. What tips do you have for other dieters?

  • Get a calendar and write your weight down once a week. Put your exercise down each day. Even if you get discouraged you can flip back several months and see your progress. It is also motivating to write your exercise down, because I hate to write none.
  • Try new foods. Try vegetables and healthy foods you have never tried. You might just find your new favorite food.
  • Decide it is a lifestyle change and not a diet. If you go on a diet then you can go off of a diet. When you go off the weight just comes back.
  • Realize that a calorie is not a calorie. Foods with refined sugar and flour are going to make you hungry. Fruits, vegetables and foods that have lots of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients will fuel your body and make it healthier. Learn about food and how it affects your body. You would never fill your car with junk, don’t treat your body worse than you would treat your car.
  • Get a support system. Find other people that want to eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle. For me my personal faith in God really helped. I spend a lot of time praying for the strength and wisdom to make wise choices. It made a real difference.
