88 Pounds Lost: This is me and I love her!
I lost a decade of my life because I was obese. Life was living me, I wasn’t living it unfortunately. I can truly say I’ve become the person I was always supposed to be. This is ME and I love her!
NAME : Kate
BEFORE WEIGHT : 280
AFTER WEIGHT : 192
POUNDS LOST : 88
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
After age 14 when my mom had me stop runway modeling. I slowly gained weight and by my sophomore year of high school, I was unrecognizable to anyone who knew me during my modeling years! I did lose weight after getting involved with sports, but once I hit 20 and became pregnant, I gained 70 pounds. I struggled with that weight for 7 years.
I’m now at the weight I was at age 19.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Obesity is like an inner demon. That’s the best way I can describe how obesity affects a person. It’s that controlling nemesis that lives inside, always holding you down, until you finally give up and accept that you’ll always be obese. I literally became content with my image and inner emotions. I was fortunate to never develope health issues due to my obesity, but it wasn’t going to be long before my body was going to start physically falling apart.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I can’t even count on my fingers how many “turning points” hit me that jump started a series of weightloss attempts! In 2015, I saw a very close friend go through weightloss surgery. I was astounded by the weightloss! I couldn’t believe I’d never heard of a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy before! I knew then that this was going to be my last option, my last attempt to finally have a chance to be the person I’ve always wanted to be.
For 5 months I searched and searched for the perfect medical insurance that would get me under the knife as soon as possible. 3 months later, I was received my beautiful sleeved stomach. The pre op and post op was the most difficult diets I’d ever attempted. Except this time, I had no choice to stop and go back to how I ate before. The thought of being on the operating table and possibly having my incisions closed, without even receiving the surgery, was enough for me to follow doctor orders. I was not about to cheat this time and be cut open for nothing!
Every day this new lifestyle of eating becomes more and more natural.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Within the first 10 days before surgery. I lost 10 pounds on a liquid diet.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Lack of funds was huge for me. That was going to determine if I was going to qualify to have the surgery or not. I pulled out an old, unused credit card and put that along with my insurance company.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes! I wanted to give up during my liquid diet. I found myself trying to calm down in a hot bath, suckling on a sugar free popsicle, rocking back and forth, crying like a drug addict going through withdrawals.
What kept me going was that THIS path was the path for me all along. I was fully ready to take a different path, but equally difficult as natural weightloss.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes. I hit 3. About 2 weeks was the longest of all. They didn’t discourage me however. I knew my body knew more about itself than me, and I let it cope however it needed.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
6 months and still going strong.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
The moments when you put on old clothes as if you know they’ll fit, but then they’re baggy. I cross my legs constantly now. It’s my position I immediately sit in! Riding in an airplane and not being cramped.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I measure my food! Before I could eat 2 burritos, a Mexican pizza, and small nachos from Taco Bell and be full. Every meal is now measured. I eat 4 times a day. I eat ketogenic style and I’d never tried it prior to surgery.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I can jog! I literally don’t feel weighed down as I jog! I walk and I do squats. I never worked out prior, only for short periods of time during my weightloss attempts.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
