I have been overweight all of my life. Growing up as many Hispanic families dinner consisted of high carb meals. Rice, tortillas, fried potatoes. However it never clicked in my mind that food played a major role in our weight. Seriously this might sound silly but I never put 2 and 2 together. My Mom has always been tiny I remember being in 2nd or 3rd grade and being able to wear her clothes. She would have stashes of full size candy bars or cookies, cake you name it. This was her diet and it didn’t affect her. So at a young ate I just figured I was more built like my Dad and this was my fate.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? Being that I have always been overweight it didn’t affect me as a child or young adult. I would say I was pretty active, I cant recall any moment in my life of something I couldn’t do because my weight. That is until I became a Mother. After my first child I gained about 50 pounds lost some then about a year and half later had my 2nd child. I gained 80 pounds with my 2nd. My 2nd pregnancy was a high risk pregnancy I was bed written for most of it and once I had her she spent some time in the NICU.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? after my 2nd child i slowly started to put on more and more weight. I started to put everything before myself and my health. November of 2016, Felicity my 1st born daughter is now 6, Amelia my 2nd child is now 5 and we find out we are expecting our 3rd child. We are excited! My husband wants a boy. a few weeks later we miscarry. We are heart broken. I feel so incredibly guilty. How could it not be my fault? Im so large.
My mind starts racing with all the ways iv been failing as a mother. Felicity turned 7 a few weeks after we lost the baby she wants to have a skating party. Shes ready she wants me to take her on to the floor and teach her but your not allowed on the ring unless you have skates on. My sister grabs her little hand and leads her on to the ring. I feel sick to my stomach. How many things will I miss? How many times will someone else have to step in and take over because my weight wont allow me? At that moment I made up my mind. I was ready! I took some time to recover from the miscarriage and started my Journey Jan 3rd 2017
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? First I sat down with my husband and told him I was ready to start my journey. Then i sat down with my parents my sister and 3 brothers and close friends. I told them I was going to start my journey and i needed their help. I need them to help hold me accountable. I told them i would send them pictures of my meals, my workouts and keep them updated with my progress. I asked that they call me on it if for some reason i didn’t. I had a good friend have great results with Herbalife so i started with that replacing 2 meals a day. I did this for the first 3 months of my journey until i learned portion control.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? I noticed about 5 weeks after starting my weightloss. I was down about 30 pounds i was sleeping better. I didn’t feel swollen. I was able to get off blood pressure medication. Me feet weren’t aching as bad. I had more energy and my feet weren’t hurting anymore.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? Portion control. I really struggled. I always felt hurgry. At the beginning a had trouble falling aleep because i would have hunger pains. A told a doctor i work for she suggested i fill up on sugar free jello or cabbage. So that’s what i did before long i was sick of jello but by that point i realized my 1 plate of food was enough.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? many times, My co workers, family and friends were very support. I cried many times but they would remind me to stop being so hard on myself and to take it 1 pound at a time. Because i asked my family and friends to hold me accountable i had videos and pictures since day 1 i was able to refer back to them. And able to see how far iv come and just kept going.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? Yes. I constantly changed up my diet. After herbalife i did the 1200 calorie diet, then low carb then keto. Iv tried intermittent fasting.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? 6 months to lose 100 pounds. 155 pounds in a year.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Many. My daughter able to wrap her arms entirely around me. Roller coaster. Flew to Washington to hike mountains. My husband was able to pick me up for the first time. I can sit criss cross again. I bought my first pair of boots that fit around my calf
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I was an emotional eater. I made dinner every night and it was always very heavy rarely veggies and usually after eating the first plate id help my self to a 2nd helping.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? before there was no physical activity even walking a quarter mile was tuff because after a day at work my feet were killing me. Now i can jog, i love to do the bleachers at the stadium and I weight train.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I made monthly goals- I think if i started my journey looking at the fact that i needed to lose 200 pounds i would of never started. Instead i told myself i want to lose 15-20 pounds. I focused on the small goals i set for myself that month and it soon added up to be big results.
- I found ways to save time and money. I work for the Medical office building next to the hospital. I get discounted food. So in the morning i would buy like 8strips of bacon for like $1.50 take a ziplock bag and use them with my meal prepping. Maybe i needed to make breakfast for the family quick scrambled eggs, add a slice of bacon and bamm they have a taco. Lets go. NO mess. OR a large side of veggies are $1 so all i had to do when i go home was make the protein
- Fitbit challenges. Id get so competitive there were frequent times i ran several times around my bed just to be in 1st.
