I’ve been overweighting and off my whole life, and most of my family was as well (that has since changed). I initially put on 40 pounds in my first year of law school, then lost 50 when I dropped out and stared the police academy. A marriage, and 2 babies later I found myself at my highest weight ever a week after my second son was born…

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Being overweight was hard and only became harder when I gained all that weight and was a law enforcement officer. My stomach would get pinched between what my bullet resistant vest and my duty belt. I’d have to shift around in my seat just to latch my seatbelt. And forget about chasing a suspect, I’m lucky no one physically challenged me during that time because I would’ve been an easy target. I went from a size 34 pant to a size 42 pant, I didn’t know a single officer who wore pants that big. I had to turn in all my old uniforms to get bigger sizes.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I got offered a position with a new agency and was given a starting date 3 months post partum. When I weighed myself a week after my last son was born I was mortified and I didn’t want to return to work being the sterotypical fat cop.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started out by simply finding my calorie deficit goal in the free MyFitnessPal app and making sure I stayed in it. It didn’t matter what i ate but I measured portions and made sure I hit my goals. I did start to wear a Fitbit but I couldn’t actually work out, but I tried to keep my steps up by walking.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It took several months for me to see a difference, I’m fairly tall (5’11”) and strong so it took 3-4 months before sometimes I felt smaller. I still struggle with my body being so much smaller and it feeling like I’ve lost any weight. My progress pictures have helped me so much!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I work rotating shifts, and so does my husband. We can end up one working days , one working nights, and no days off together. Sometimes my shifts are from 1700-0300 and sometimes 0700-1700. My overtime is uncontrollable and my ten hour shift can go to 15-16 hours. There are no places to purchase food after midnight and from 9-12 the only thing open is gas stations. It’s crucial for my nutrition to be on point because some days there’s no time to workout.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
It’s a struggle every day! I have to recommit every morning, habit definitely helps. I check different instagram accounts daily that have helped inspire me, they also help me not feel alone in this journey. I think weighing every day actually helped me because when I did lose motivation I never let it get so far that I felt I undid all my progress.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I lose weight cyclically, for 2 weeks in I consistently lose, then I gain a bunch in a week, then I stall for a week. Having tracked it daily I’ve learned how my body works. Otherwise I’ve maintained a consistent loss.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It’s taken 9 months to lose 90 pounds, and I’m hoping to reach 110 pounds lost by 12 months.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
All the time! I’ve taken progress pictures of different pants that fit, the smaller sizes of underwear, getting back into my wedding dress (and now making it too big!). Just bending over and not feeling out of breath, or having extra room in a seat. They happen all the time.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I love food! When I was heavier I could French toast and a cinnamon roll for breakfast, a cheeseburger and fries for lunch, and pats for dinner. I never stopped to think about it as long as it sounded good.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I didn’t do any physical activity when I was pregnant. Before I was an outdoor loving (kayaking, hiking, snowboarding, shed hunting) and I’m slowly getting back to those things. But it’s so hard with little kids! I’m slowly becoming consistent doing beachbody on demand workouts which are so convenient. My main goal is to keep moving and become harder to kill. I don’t want to leave my children without their mom or my husband without his wife because I was lazy, and unprepared for a deadly encounter.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Every ten pounds I lost I rewarded myself with a cool gift (a new tattoo or purse). Something that wasn’t good related. I kept it up on a whiteboard and cross off the next increment when I reach it.
- I capped my ultimate goal and time to reach it at an important end date. 12 months, 110 pounds, and to celebrate it would be our anniversary weekend .
- Pick one thing to work on and build up. It’s overwhelming to try to do it all at once. Focus on water, then cut processed foods, then up your activity, then dial in calories. Lots of little steps are what wins the marathon!
