WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Always had been the “bigger” girl, when I was a kid people would say I’m “big boned”. I played sports, I was very active. But my weight sky rocketed after my daughter was born, a tragic event took place and forever changed her and my life altogether. I fed my emotions. Then I got a physical job lost, then had to quit and gained,like yo-yo, never helping the source of the problems. I met my husband and there was a ex and step kids that would use my weight against me. It was amazing how I let the little people define my life. Terrorize me really.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I eventually developed high blood pressure, got put on meds. My knees broke down and today I have had a knee surgery and in need of a total new knee. I suffer from stage 4 arthritis in both knees, and no cartilage left with bone spurs. I stayed in bed a lot, I cried and felt worthless. I was fatigued .
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
My son joined a gym was bragging of how he felt how he lost fast and I was jealous. It was the beginning of a new year 2012 and I wanted to feel good be outside and stop hiding. I wanted to look forward to the warm weather. I forgot about how much I enjoyed life.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I literally went and joined the gym my son was at and did Zumba . It was just the treadmill at first, but it stirred up happy. I felt so good I then went to Zumba, which led to turbo kick. I was then addicted to the intensity , no matter how bad it hurt, I was dedicated! It was like a drug. I would walk everywhere with my music. Then was turned onto the app of calorie counting. Didn’t realize you must count calories too. Started reading and educating myself. Never used a trainer!
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
With starting so large I saw results on the scale in the first week, huge drops! Then within a couple months clothes were getting baggy. My energy was out of control, sleep was very limited.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Working through the painful knees. Controlling cravings and the ridding of the processed foods.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Not really, I was finally in control of me, I was realizing that me, myself, and it was making this happen.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes … Oh for like almost 6 months. I dropped calories it broke, but I was losing lean muscle so I went up and added heavy weight lifting.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
The first 9 months. I’m not done yet, still pushing hard today.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Of course I dropped inches, 10 sizes in pants, 4 in tops. My strength mentally and physically are amazing! I found the REAL me.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Oh my, I eat fresh veggies, lean meats, high protein, small amounts of grains and nothing but coffee in the morning and water to drink.
Before, mostly processed foods, boxed stuff, microwave meals primary pizza and I would add a bag of cheese on top. Eat out fast food everyday. Pop, chips, candy.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I’m full of energy, I want to volunteer, help reach out most of all…. I’m HAPPY, I love who I’ve become
