Her Children Motivated Her to Lose 104 Pounds by Walking!
Kaci Monaghan was afraid of dying and abandoning her four kids, so she started walking and lost almost a third of her body weight

Kaci Monaghan, a teacher from Lawson,Mo., was always what you could call “a little overweight,” but after the birth of her fourth child, the scale read 277 pounds and she just couldn’t shed the weight. She was always busy running around, taking care of her kids and husband, and she didn’t have time to focus on herself. Eventually, she sought comfort in late-night eating. “It was the only quiet time of day, when everyone was asleep. I could sit and watch TV—that didn’t have singing cartoons—and just indulge in whatever I wanted,” she says.
The Turning Point
Her body began to shut down. She had severe neck problems that caused her to pass out if she laughed or coughed. She had been seeking medical treatment, but nobody could figure out what was wrong. She feared she would die driving in the car with her kids. The thought of leaving her children terrified her, and she knew it was time to make a change.
Kaci set two big goals: no eating after 7 p.m. and no diet soda. She also started eating healthier foods. By the end of the first month, she lost 26.5 pounds—just by adjusting her diet. She started exercising the second month, walking a mile 3 days a week and doing strength training (light weights, squats, and abs exercises) 2 days a week. Each month, she upped her regimen. She now walks 10 miles a week and has added Pilates to her strength training.
She couldn’t have lost the weight without help from her friends. She told everyone about her plan and kept in touch with a couple people who were also making lifestyle changes. She also started writing a blog about her weight loss journey, which was very therapeutic.
When Kaci went back for her high school’s homecoming, her grandma didn’t recognize her. Once her grandma figured it out, she cried.
Make a goal. Sticking to your goals is key. “I never miss an exercise day and I never ‘cheat’ on one of my goals.”
Keep a schedule! Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day, and work out when you’re supposed to. “It’s important to keep a routine no matter what time of year it is.”
Start fresh every day. “[When] I have a setback, I erase it from my mind immediately.”
