Before Weight: 187 pounds

How I Gained It: As a child, I was always the biggest girl in the class. I remember tearfully wishing for a doctor to just cut all my fat off. My parents were both overweight and I thought I was destined to be fat. During my teen years, I slimmed down, but struggled to keep it off and controlled it by keeping very active, taking diet pills and eventually developing bulimia.

Once I got married and started having children, I could never lose all the weight I gained. I have four children and would gain extra pounds with each pregnancy. I loved food and everything about it.

Breaking Point: I tried all types of diets: Organic, vegetarian, canned shakes, grapefruit, low carb, you name it. I even tortured myself with exercise, trying to run and do aerobics with an extra 50 pounds on me! I was so tired — tired of cooking different meals for my family, tired of exercising because I felt I had to, tired of spending so much money on food and clothing! Finally, after doing the newest no-carb diet, I had a gallbladder attack. This was more painful than childbirth; I thought I was dying. I realized I was literally killing myself slowly with all the extra weight and harsh diets — I was putting so much stress on my body. I was in pain, not only from the gallbladder issues but also from being overweight and unhappy. I was unhappy with my marriage and I was always screaming at my children. I’m sure the next step would have been anti-depressants.

How I Lost It: A few days after praying to God for the answer for my unhappiness, I found a diet book at a garage sale for $1. It was called the “Weigh Down Diet” by Gwen Shamblin. My heart leapt when I saw it and I felt it was an answered prayer. I discovered that the diet has been around for over 20 years. It’s largely faith-based, so it helped me address the root of the problem of overeating. I applied the principles to my life immediately and started losing weight.

I also joined Weigh Down classes online, which helped me lose more weight. The class videos taught me how to eat, how to end the desire to eat when I was not hungry and how to stop emotional eating. One of the best tips I learned was to eat only when true physical hunger hits — a real stomach growl — and to stop when satisfied, not to the point where I’m stuffed. Food has become fuel. When I’m tempted to eat for any other reason, I pray or take a look at the emotional difficulties I’m experiencing. Now, I eat when I am hungry and I eat regular foods — even sweets in small amounts.

I lost 50 pounds, but that was just the beginning — I also quit biting my nails, my marriage got better and I’m a much more patient mama. My life is so much more peaceful, joyful and full of love!

After Weight: 137 pounds
