WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I had struggled with weight my entire adult life, but it wasn’t until after the death of a close relative that I really started having problems. She left behind 3 children and we adopted them into our family with our 3 children at the time. We made due the best we could but more and more problems kept piling up. My husband lost his job shortly after and then our house. It was more than I could bare. By the time I became pregnant with my last child, I was topping the scales at 301. At that point, I noticed I have allowed my emotional eating and depression get the best of me.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Being overweight really started to take a toll on my body. After the birth of my baby boy, I was unable to walk up and down steps. My knees were literally giving up on me because of all the weight I had gain. I couldn’t run, walk with out losing my running out of breath, or walk long distances.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
When my son was learning to crawl and was at top of the steps, I couldn’t even run to get him to safety. Thank God one of my other children was there to assist me but that was the point I knew I needed to do something.
So I went to the doctor to see about a knee replacement and the doctor took on look at me and said with out hesitation Mrs. Williams you have way too much fat around your knees, a knee replacement is unnecessary you need to lose weight, simple as that.
After hearing that and it severely hurting my feelings, that is when I woke up and knew I needed to do something.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started out with Zumba one day a week. I also started with cutting out sodas and sugary drinks.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
30 days I noticed a small difference with my clothes fitting lose
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Getting thru the pain of using muscles you have never used before and the emotional and mental abuse you put yourself thru thinking you are unable to do it because the scale don’t always move the way you want it too. Also the biggest thing for me was the eating. I was an emotional food addict. I abused food for my comfort and to stop eating what I wanted when I wanted how I wanted was and is still hard.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I always want to give up when the scale stalls. But when I look at my kids look at my every move, taking mental notes makes me fight to be a better person. I never want to show them that it’s okay to give up on what you started. I had to show them that with determination and hard work you will hit your goals.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I am currently experiencing a weigh plateau. I am working on changing things up a bit and increasing my workouts.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took me about 9 months to lose the bulk of my weight.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Being able to regain the use of my limbs and becoming a Zumba instructor!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I organize my eating now with a lot of preplanning. I eat breakfast every morning, something I never did. I also drink a gallon to a gallon in a half of water every day compared to drinking 6 sodas a day. I also eat more fresh meats, veggies and fruits instead of take out and processed foods.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am now a Zumba and Piloxing Instructor!!! I am also training myself to be a 5k runner one day and lifting weights. Jillian Micheal is my hero and I love working out to her videos as well.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Drink TONS of water!
- Eat tons more fresh fruits and veggies
- Pre plan ALL your meals for EVERYDAY of the week. If you are a food addict give yourself few “cheat” days to keep from relapsing!
- Start out walking! Walking is the best exercise ever!
- Give yourself a break. If you slip, it’s okay. Be nice to you! IF you believe you can, you can…but if you beat yourself up you will sabotage all your hard work! Stay positive!
