Amanda’s 94 Pound Diet Bet and Calorie Counting Weight Loss Transformation
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I’ve been overweight my entire life. Even in elementary school I remember feeling bigger than all my classmates. I felt being big was just part of who I was.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I always felt second best. I hated anything with physical activity becauae I was scared I couldn’t do it. It always felt so impossible. I always set my goals lower because I didnt have any confidence. Even in work and dating, I always aimed for jobs/people I knew I could get. I never believed anyone would want to hire or be with the fat girl.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I got to the heaviest weight I was and just realized how big I was. I let my self go without even realizing. I ate whatever I wanted and it showed. I even remember doing a “tour de fast food” with my ex. We stopped and got something at every fast food establishment for dinner.
Looking back, I cant believe I lived that way. I think I eventually just felt sickened by my lack of self control. I know I still felt annoyed from graduating school feeling like an outsider. I think that pushed me a lot. I wanted classmates to see me smaller. I wanted to them to see that I wasn’t meant to be fat.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
The first thing I did was purged my whole kitchen. I made a super healthy list of foods and stocked it up. Nothing makes you more excited than a full kitchen. I downloaded my fitness pal and started counting calories.
I have learned sooooo much about food through this app. I went to the gym around 4 days a week and I tried to burn at least 400 calories. I did a lot of different machines. My favorite machine when I started was always the elliptical. That machine was my first love.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Almost immediately. Throughout high school, I’d diet, or I’d exercise, but I never did it together ans I never was strict with it. Once I did, the weight literally fell off. I loat the majority in the first year!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
My hardest thing when starting was being exhasuted. I’d work 5am to 1 pm and then go right to cosmetology school at 1pm. Id get home and be so tired. I pushed through and still went to the gym though! Its crazy that pushing yourself to go actually gives you more energy in the long run.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
So many times I’ve wanted to give up! I look for motivation. My biggest motivators are a full kitchen, new workout clothes, a good playlist, and weightloss shows/stories. I love following peoples successes. I follow so many people on facebook and I change their settings so I see all of their profiles first thing every day. Nothing more motivating!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit plateaus so many times. I honestly fell off once or twice and gained some weight back a few times because I feel defeated. I jumped back on though! This last time I stuck through it and hit my lowest. I changed up food and exercise. I cut dairy out, then I tried not meat. Im always just testing my body. I like to srr how much willpower I have.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost the majority in he firsr year, but for the full amount it’s been five years.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Ive had so many! Clothes being to big was a big one… People telling me they don’t even recognize me or how great I look. Actually at one point, i remember going to Busch gardens and not worrying that I could fit in a ride. Thats huge!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was heavier I ate everything. Id eat fast food, home cooking, veggies, literally everything. I just loved getting to that full feeling. Once there, I’m miserable and uncomfortable, but I loved the process. Its was such a bad addiction. Counting calories saved my life!
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
when I was heavier, I couldve sworn I had asthma. I couldnt breathe when I worked out, everything hurt, and I would get so dizzy. Even getting out of the car was hard to me! I started mainly doing the elliptical. It got so much easier after the second and third week. I just had to push through. Today, I’m running two miles a day. I cant even believe it! I never in a million years thought id be able to run more than 3 minutes. Its crazy!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I did diet bets! They are so cool. You can do it with all your friends. You just bet a certain amount that you can lose so much weight in a month. If you succeed, you split the pot with everyone that also lost their amount!
- For water intake, I had a gallon jug marked with every hour. I had to drink so much by each hour!
- Any kind of challenge pumps me. Vegan january, whole 30, theres so many! They always get me so excited to try new things.
- I made a list of weights in 5 lbs increments. For every 5 lbs I lost, I would reward myself with something. Once I hit bigger amounts, I get bigger prizes!
- If I didnt want to go to the gym, id make myself at least pull into the parking lot. If at that point, I still wanted to leave, thrn i would! 9 chances out of 10, you will push through at least for a short one!
