WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have always struggled with my weight. As a young adult, I was obsessed with losing weight and so I went on many diets to try and achieve my goals. Once I had lost the weight, I would stop the diet and then put the weight back on. Unfortunately, every time the weight went back on, I ended up heavier than I had ever been before and slowly, my weight started to climb and climb until I reached breaking point and decided to do something about it, once and for all.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight affected many aspects of my life. At my heaviest, I was facing many health issues including early signs of diabetes and I was on medication for high blood pressure. I wouldn’t participate in many different social activities because of my weight and clothes shopping was a nightmare! In summer, all my family would be swimming at the beach while I was bring to cover up.
I wasn’t able to do things like go-karting because I simply wouldn’t fit in the little seat!
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
One day it all just got too much. I had just left a job of 12 years and was faced with a situation where I had to be realistic about my weight and it scared me. I was booked as a passenger on a small helicopter as part of a holiday activity on a Pacific Cruise. I realized that I had to record my weight on the form and it was mortifying! It was the moment that made me realize I needed to do something about my weight.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started using My Fitness pal and I joined the gym. I also started walking a few times a week.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I lost 50 kilos in 14 months and then it took me a further two months to lose another 10 kilos. I have lost 60 kilos in all, although it does fluctuate up and down a bit now. I will never go back to my biggest weight and my lifestyle now will make sure of that!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The harder part was letting go of my old self. She was the persona that everybody loved and I was worried that people wouldn’t like the new me. Lucky I was wrong!
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I wanted to give up a couple of times. It was when I was faced with a social situation where everyone was drinking and eating heaps. I stuck to healthy options and managed quite well, although there were times when I did indulge and really enjoyed myself when I did. I knew that giving up was never an option and I knew that I just had to keep going no matter what.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit quite a few plateaus and they were tough to deal with. I was pretty determined though and used a few different strategies to get the weight coming off again. One of these things was mixing up my workout routines and doing something different. I also changed what I was eating a bit and soon enough, I would start losing weight again.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost 50 kilos in 14 months and the another 10 kilos in the two months after that.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Heaps! I went down from a size 22 jeans to a size 10 and the measuring tape was a great indicator of victory too. My wedding ring is way too big now … I need to get it resized.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I east heaps more vegetables now and nowhere near as much processed food. I am aware of the amount of fat in food and try to keep fat and sugar as low as possible. I eat a lot of chicken and stirfrys and heaps of fruit and vegetables. I use healthy alternatives to unhealthy options wherever possible. I even tried kale chips the other day and they are delicious!
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My physical activity was virtually none before> Now I go to the gym as often as I can and I walk and run. I work out as often as I can but try to get in at least 3-4 workouts a week.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Eat little, healthy snacks often so that you don’t get hungry. Once you become hungry, you are more likely to eat unhealthy options.
- Keep healthy options in the house and don’t stock the pantry with all those unhealthy things like chips and lolls. Remove the temptation
- If you are prone to emotional eating, try going for a walk or do yoga or meditation when you are feeling emotional. Feeding the emotions with food is a habit that I used to have but I worked hard to break it.
- Use positive thing techniques all the time. Say things to yourself that are encouraging like “you can do it” and “just keep going”
- Don’t beat yourself up if you’ve had an unhealthy option. Start fresh on your next meal and just keep going. It takes time and you need to be patient.
