I’ve been overweight all my life as far back as I can remember.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? It never really made me depressed, I accepted who I was but after losing nearly 100lbs I now realise it held me back more than I thought..
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and the doctor told me I was one step away from type 2 diabetes. That and the fact I was out of breath on the smallest exertion made me realise I had to do something for the sake of my health
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I joined weightwatchers in 2012
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? I lost weight quickly at first, over the course of a couple of years I lost nearly 84lbs. I joined a gym and was actually starting to enjoy exercise! Before my weight loss I did no exercise at all, in fact I tried my best to avoid it.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? I lowered my blood pressure by eating healthily and exercising. I hated exercising before joining weightwatchers!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? Not really. I just stopped going to class and my old habits started creeping in. When my daughter announced she was getting married in June 2016 that was the pivotal moment I knew I had to take control of my life again. My job had changed back to no more travelling so I rejoined weightwatchers in July 2015.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? I’ve lost 58lbs in the 18 months since being back at weightwatchers and I’m delighted with my progress so far! I’ve got around 24lbs until I’m at goal and am determined to do this!!
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Lots. Like fitting in the bath tub! Constantly going down dress sizes, being told how amazing I was looking and being so fit I was able to complete 40 mile bike runs!!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I eat more protein and less carbs. Chocolate is now a treat and not a necessity. I used to eat cream cakes by the dozen but now I can’t tell you when I last ate one? I plan ahead every single week and shop for my meals as planned. I batch cook soups and stews and freeze them so I’m never out of healthy ideas for meals.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I cycle miles and miles with my husband who is a keen road cyclist. I hadn’t been on a bike for nearly 40 years prior to last summer! I bought an elliptical trainer and use this 3 times a week and also walk my 3 beloved dogs miles and miles on the weekends.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I drink flavoured green tea instead of coffee in the evenings
- I try to exercise first thing in the morning before work as by the time I get in, I’m too tired
- I hung my mother of the bride outfit upon front of my elliptical trainer so I could see it every time I worked out. It was 3 sizes too small when I bought it but by the time the wedding cane around, it fitted with room to spare!
