I had always been a happy, active wife and working mother of two beautiful children..until a serious accident 17 years ago put me in a wheelchair for three months.
Through the years I had 11 surgeries on my badly injured right leg. Eventually my right ankle had to be fused. I continued to work, but was in constant pain. In September 2012, I was laid off from my job at age 55 and forced to take early retirement. I became increasingly despondent due to the loss of income and pain. My husband of 37 years is on disability for a dissected aorta.
My right knee is bone on bone and I needed a right knee replacement. I began to drink heavily to numb the physical and emotional pain. My AHA moment came on January 8th, 2012. I was drinking heavily and was so despondent I was suicidal. I called my daughter in CA to say goodbye. Unknown to me she had her finace call an ambulance while she kept me on the phone. I was taken to the ER and spent 3 days in rehab. It was a life changing experience! I couldn’t believe my life had come to this!
When I was released from the hospital, I knew I had to turn my life around. I stopped drinking completely and started to eat healthy. No sugar, lean protein, low carbs, fresh fruit and vegetables. I slowly began to lose weight. I needed to exercise, but how? Due to my fused right ankle and knee..even walking was out of the question.
In May 2012, a very dear friend asked me to join a water aerobics class with her. I loved it! Finally I could exercise and enjoy being with others! I took water aerobics 4 times a week and exercised at the pool the other 3 days.The weight and inches begin to fall off and I began to feel so much better, emotionally and physically! When the pool closed, I joined a indoor pool so I could continue to exercise everyday.
For someone with joint issues swimming and water aerobics are a great way to get your cardiac and strength training. Today I am down 85lbs! I have gone from a size 3X to a size 12! It has truly been life altering! My orthopedic Dr. didn’t even recognize me, when I saw him this September. I have been able to put off my knee replacement and I’m no longer am in constant pain. I also saw my family physician in September for a checkup.
He too was amazed and now I’m in excellent health. I now love to go out and I’m no longer depressed or isolate myself. I hope my story will inspire and give hope to others. My family and friends were very supportive and cheered me on. But you are the only one that can change your life! It’s never to late to change your life and never, ever give up! If I can do it, so can you! I think my “before” and “after” photos say it all!
