I Lost 150 Pounds: Monica’s Weight Loss Transformation To A Brand New Self
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
My weight has always been a problem for me as long as I can remember during my later years. As a child however I don’t remember being plus sized until after a summer stay with my grandparents when I was about 7 years old and eating all the down South country cooking that Granny would prepare for me.
I dare not place blame on my dear Granny, because she prepared and cooked her meals with a lot of passion and love, but those foods opened up taste buds that spiraled out of control for so many years later.
NAME : Monica
BEFORE WEIGHT : 335
AFTER WEIGHT : 184
POUNDS LOST : 150
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I can’t really say that my weight affected me on a social level, because I have always loved who I was as a person no matter what size. However, I can remember so many instances being picked at and talked about in some of the most horrible ways because I was plus sized during my school age years. I remember as a young child willing to take an F in gym class because I was ashamed to dress out for the fear of being picked at by my classmates.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
In 2013 I has to have a physical done for work and that is when I found out that I had high blood pressure. The first thing that came to mind was, “Lord am I going to die”? I was simply scared out of my mind. I have never had any health issues and so it was very scary for me because you’re talking about your heart with all of this and I knew it was serious and no joking matter. I can remember many days at work having to use my register as a support because I would start to feel faint at times. It was during these times that I would think that maybe this was how my life was going to end.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I was determined from the start to be successful at this although I knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. I started off slow because I had to first realize that I didn’t just become this way overnight so my results were not going to happen overnight. I was a person that hardly drank any water as essential as it is to the human body. I increased my water intake challenging myself to drink as much as I could daily until now I can drink a gallon a day. I slowly took away sodas and sugary drinks, to date I haven’t had a soda in almost three years. I slowly added increased veggies and fruits in my daily diet mostly in the form of a smoothie. I limited my fried foods to now I don’t fry any of my foods. I either grill, broil, or bake my meats and now I no longer eat red meat or pork. I have completely cut out sweets as well, if I do have a sweet craving I do granola or fiber one bars as well as yogurt.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
During the first week of changing my eating habits, I lost 3 pounds, by the end of the first month I had lost almost 10 pounds.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had to grow to love exercising. I was one that was always about my hair and making sure that at all times every strand was always in place. I had to embrace the fact that it wasn’t about hair and that ultimately my life was way more important.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
From the very start, failure for me was not an option. My children and my husband kept me motivated. I just wasn’t ready to leave my children without a mom or my husband without a wife.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit several plateaus during my journey, but I never let them hinder me or offer me in set backs. The plateaus that I set made me push even harder to get to the next level.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost the majority of my weight in the first year, but it has taken me 4 years to get to where I am, and I haven’t gained a pound of it back. I am so determined to stay and remain healthy. I am determined to LIVE.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes!!!! I would often buy pieces of clothing that was too small for me and my focus would be to get into them in a certain time frame.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was a junk food junkie before my healthy lifestyle change took place. I would eat out for breakfast, lunch and dinner some days.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Before my change in eating habits, and my desire to live healthy working out was the farthest from my mind. When I started my transition I started my exercise routine in the gym, dedicating 30 minutes a day to my health by way of cardio. I have gone from walking a mile a day to sometimes walking 4 miles a day. The most that I have walked in a single day is 7 miles and not a marathon. I live for what I do now as I want to see my children grow up and I want to grow old with my husband. There is not a day that goes by when I don’t dedicate at least 30 minutes to my health.
