WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I started developing a weight problem after the birth of my second daughter when I suffered from post partum depression and was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. In order to cope with it all I was continually turning to food for comfort.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
As I began to gain weight I was less likely to go out in public, see friends or even want to spend time with my family. I refused to go out on dates with my husband because I hated trying to get dressed and I became even more isolated because of how self conscious I was. I felt disgusting in my skin and felt like all I needed to do was hide. It was a horrible feeling which cost me a lot of relationships due to pushing them away and a loss of memories because I didn’t want to do anything.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After I had my third daughter I immediately started suffering from worsening post partum depression and with three girls (at the time 4, 2 and newborn) I wanted more for them. My oldest was starting school and I was constantly feeling like I would hold her back from having a social life because I didn’t want to talk to other moms because I was so self conscious. I knew I wanted to be happier and fight against my depression which I knew was going to help my emotional eating !
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
In the very beginning I decided to jump into cleaning up my diet and trying to workout. I had no idea where to start with working out but continue to try new things every day. I jogged, went to a local gym (which for me didn’t last long) and then I started working out at home around my kids schedules.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It took a few months before I saw serious change but that was mostly due to lack of knowledge and a lot of trial and error. But slowly I started to see results and as I found what worked with nutrition and working out for my body I started to see major results!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
My depression was my biggest obstacle because I was in what felt like a hole I couldn’t get out of. I had the hardest time trying to just get off the couch because my motivation and drive was so low. So everyday I really had to convince myself and talk myself into getting it done and why it mattered. I also have IBS which was at its worst around the time I started my journey and I really needed to focus on the types of foods I was eating to help my symptoms.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
There were so many times I wanted to give up. I would cry on the living room for kid workout because of how hard it was and how much I didn’t want to do it. But I knew what giving up felt like. I knew what it felt like to feel like crap and I didn’t want to do that. I didn’t want to let my girls down or not give them a mom they deserved. So I spoke that into my head when things got hard. I reminded myself of my reason.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I have definitely many times ! I have always made sure to focus on my nutrition, become more strict and switch up my fitness routine when I hit a plateau because it helps to kick start the body. It helps trick the muscles to do something different.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took me 18 months to lose the weight !!
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Definitely !!! I was able to do the obstacle course that I wasn’t able to do before. I was able to fit into my pre baby winter jacket that hadn’t for me in years. I was able to start wearing some of my favourite clothes again. But I think my most favourite non scale victory was being able to feel like I could go on a date with my husband again confidently.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was the definition of an emotional eater. I loved to eat healthy but I just didn’t. It didn’t curb my cravings or help me curb my emotions. So I ate carbs and fast food and ice cream and chocolate. It was not a good variety of foods at all.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I could barely walk up and down the stairs to do laundry before. It was very difficult to go and play with my kids because I was winded. I was constantly in pain because of the weight I was carrying. But now, now I can do things with ease. I absolutely love being able to run around my back yard or house and play with my daughters without having to stop for a break because I feel like I am going to pass out. I have run a 5K obstacle course and have a new found love for them because they are a challenge but one I can get through. One I never thought I could do. I cannot wait to do more !
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I always meal prepped, less room for excuses !
- Lay out your workout clothes so you almost trip over them in the morning ! Rather than just moving them you just put them on and get it done.
- I picked a NON food related reward for each weight loss milestone to keep me motivated and excited.
- Have a dance party !!!! Before I would start working out even when I didn’t want to, I’d put my favourite songs on and sing and dance to get my energy up and spark my happiness !!!
