WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have had a weight problem my entire life. Ever since I can remember I was the big kid. I was always taller and heavier than the other girls.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight made me self conscious. I worried about what other people would think of me. I hate going shopping, and always felt inferior to my friends.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I got engaged to my amazing husband at Disney World in December, 2014. There were so many eyes on us and I remember feeling so uncomfortable. I looked at the photos from that day and instantly knew I needed to change my life.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started with a gym membership. I signed up January 26th, 2015. I signed up for Weight Watchers a few days later. I also used Instagram for motivation, and as my journal. I had tried every diet, so many times, all resulting in failure. I knew this time had to be different. I went in with the mindset that I would succeed.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I saw results on the scale the first week. 3 lbs down, then 2, then 1, then 3. At first it was my only motivation. It took about 3 months and about 35 lbs before I really saw my results in the mirror and in my clothes. After the intitial 35, my clothing size changed more quickly. While I wasn’t losing on the scale as fast, all of the other changed and NSV were motivation enough!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I think my biggest challenge was balance. I was a newly engaged 22 year old with a crazy social life. I sometimes felt like I had to give up my fun to follow my diet. Finding that balance was key to my success.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Did I? I still do. There are great days, weeks, months. There are also crappy days, weeks, and months. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall down, the key is getting back up… EVERY single time!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit a weight loss plateau a few times. I switched it up. Sometimes a new workout, sometimes a cheat day followed with immediately getting back on track. Sometimes you just have to keep doing what you’re doing and know that the scale will eventually move.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost about 90 lbs in 10 months. I started January 26, 2015. I got Married December 5, 2015 weighing 146.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Every single day that I didn’t binge, and didn’t quit was a non scale victory. Every morning I showed up at the gym was too. My clothing sizes changing, and losing 53 inches was also a NSV.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am now maintaining. I have a small treat every day, it keeps me sane. I used to eat two HUGE meals of fried food and whatever else I wanted every single day. Now I eat constantly, and I eat with purpose.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I hike, and I enjoy it. I walk for fun, and try new workout classes. I love to be on the go!
