I’ve been obese my entire life but never saw it as an issue & looked to food for comfort.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? It affected my ability to be active, always leaving me short breathe or tired doing minimal movement & not being confident in myself.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? Being tagged in a candid photo from a family event on Facebook, I couldn’t believe how I looked & it honestly made me really upset with myself. I told myself that day that I was tired of being tired & ready to change my lifestyle for the better.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I started with eliminating sugary & fried foods & soda. I went on daily walks around my neighborhood or got on the treadmill until I hit my daily goal of 10K steps. I started meal prepping to keep me disciplined & on track of what I was putting into my body. I took progress photos to hold myself accountable throughout my journey.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? I didn’t start seeing results until week 6 for me. I noticed my weightloss first in my hands (I lost two ring sizes) & feet (lost a shoe size).
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? Starting my weightloss journey during the summer of my senior year in college, definitely budgeting my meal prepping bi-weekly & staying within my means. I didn’t have the most support from my family when I started losing weight, which pushed me to keep losing the pounds. I had to learn to love fitness in a new way. Starting out, you couldn’t pay me to go gym now I feel incomplete when I miss a workout. It went from going to the gym to lose weight to going to the gym to maintain my health & improve on myself. I learned that change starts with changing your mindset.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? Always. You have your good days & your bad days, where you do want to give up. I’ve learned to overcome that by going into every workout with a goal. I always push myself to be better than I was yesterday. Progress keeps me going, seeing your hardwork pay off.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? Yes, once I’ve hit 75lbs loss it’s been harder to lose the weight. So I started hosting weightloss challenges to get me motivated & physical in different ways.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? I started my journey June 1, 2015. So it took about 13 months to lose 87lbs so far.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Monthly & I love it! I love trying on new clothes that are smaller sizes & being able to participate in activities that I used to not have the confidence to do.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? When I was heavier, I ate anything I wanted without care. Now I’m cautious of what I put into my body & eat pretty clean. I tend to eat everything baked or grilled compared to fried.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I never worked out, didn’t care to be active at all. Now I’m all about working up a good sweat! You can mix up your workouts making them more enjoyable & non repetitive. I’m always open to trying new fitness classes & workouts.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Drink your water! It’s good for you & a great way of flushing out your body naturally.
- You are what you eat; so don’t be cheap, easy or fake. Be mindful of what you’re putting into your body.
- Do it for you. Being on a weightloss journey is for bettering yourself so make sure your intentions are pure & you’re doing this for the right reasons. This has to be about YOU!
- Accountability, hold yourself accountable & track your progress.
- Clean out the kitchen, don’t have temptations around if you don’t have to.
