WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I don’t remember exactly but my weight was something I always struggled with even when I was a little girl.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Every single aspect was affected. My relationships with friends, family, bosses and most importantly my relationship with myself.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I was at a fair with my best friend around November 2014, my friend is a very beautiful person inside and out. I made a comment that day to her about my weight that made her feel uncomfortable. I said, “Standing next to you makes me feel like a dinosaur”. At first she didn’t know what to say but after she said, “you make me feel like I am doing something wrong by just standing next to you”. At that moment it all hit me! I guess I expected her to giggle and brush it off but she was 100% real. My relationship with my friends was suffering because of my self confidence in myself! I knew I needed to make a change because this was the one friend who’s love for was like a sister to me.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I do not think anything in life is a coincidence. Around December 2014 I lost my job and I was a bit ashamed of it, so I told my family I didn’t want anyone to know and stayed out 8 hours a day pretending I still had a job. I would meal prep my meals in advance and kept myself busy. I would go hiking or take boot camp classes and go to the gym right after. My fitness addiction had started, and I was seeing results and that’s when I got hooked.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
The first month I noticed it but others around me did not notice it till after the 3rd month of being consistent and dedicated with my fitness and nutrition.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Temptation was always there especially in the beginning of my journey. My family is Egyptian and my mom makes some of the best Arabic food. It was a bit difficult but meal prepping helped me stay focused! Another thing that was a bit difficult was my confidence in the gym when it came to lifting weights. I did take many boot camps so I had my form down! However as anyone knows lifting weights especially as a big girl can be quite intimidating. That was something I had to overcome and I am so glad I did!
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I was so focused that I hated taking rest days because they always turned into cheat days. Usually I would mess up and give up my efforts to continue. This time around I realized that this journey really is a “lifestyle change”. This is reality, you have your family get togethers, birthdays, holidays, weddings, whatever it might be but as long as you bounce back it’s fine to have these cheat events to celebrate!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes I hit many weight loss plateaus while on my journey. However I learned to switch up my fitness routine and/or my nutrition every month, and that helped a lot.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took me about a year to lose the 85lb. And another 6 months to ignore the scale and focus on changing my body composition by lifting more weights!
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Absolutely! Many actually! I would never wear shorts in public and now I can say I can! Besides my clothes my biggest NSV was my confidence and self worth in myself! I use to settle for less, with relationships or how I let people treat me, but not anymore! I put a lot of effort in learning to love myself that I won’t settle for anything less.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat a lot healthier, I eat 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. I try to taper out my carbs throughout the day. I make sure I do 45 min of cardio a day and also lift weights. But most importantly I learned how to take rest days which at one point was extremely hard for me to do. I knew the importance of letting your body recover and I did just that!
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was heavier there was no physical activity. I was extremely lazy and always avoided anything that required me to move around much. Now I noticed my body craves and even sometimes aches when I don’t workout or stay active.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Stay consistent even when you do not see results, because I promise you if you stay true to your fitness and nutrition efforts you will get there!
- Drink a lot of liquids like water, green tea, lemon water, oolong tea and even add apple cider vinegar.
- Messing up once in a while is normal. This is part of life, as soon as you accept and realize this the easier it will be for you to get back on it and keep going.
- If you know temptation will ruine your efforts stay away from it till you feel comfortable. I had to do this with going out with friends, at first it was hard and I was called the “boring one” but I was satisfied when I reached my goals without giving in to things that brought me shot term satisfaction.
- Meal prep! Meal prep! Meal prep! Most important advice I could give anyone! Prepping your meals in advance helps you stay focused! What you put into your body is extremely important so why not make it yourself? It cost less, taste better, and keeps you consistent! If you fail to plan, you will plan to fail.
