WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I’ve always been overweight but my senior year in high school I was going through a very hard time in my life and ate anything and everything in front of me gaining up to the 260s. I started my journey at 250 though.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
It affected every aspect in my life, I couldn’t fit into clothes, I’d get frowned upon, I couldn’t fit into rollar coaster rides, I was very unhappy with everything and never accepted myself.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I looked in the mirror one day and said “that’s it Maria, you need to work hard for what you want” I have those pictures to this day.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started with the master cleanse. Not knowing how to actually lose weight. I just knew I wanted to lose a drastic amount of weight and wasn’t gonna stop until I did. It was all a learning process, but I’m still learning to this day.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I tell everyone to give it at least 3 months until you really see results for yourself. AND to take lots and lots of pictures!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Non of my friends or family took me seriously until they saw that I was actually shredding my weight. Being healthy is very expensive but if you think about all the junk you buy on a daily basis and switch it around, anyone can do it! Making my weightloss Instagram account was what really helped me. My followers are the people who have been with me through thick and thin. I’m so thankful for them.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Of course, while losing my weight I was in a very toxic relationship with a prescription pain pill addict who brought me down in ways I couldn’t explain. I was at the lowest of my lows, but it has made me as strong as I am today. Nothing can tear me down now.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Of course I did! Around 217, and 182 I couldn’t get past those weights but just a little more effort at the gym and changing my diet up made me climb those plateaos.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I’m not done yet. I’d love to lose a full 100 pounds, but so far I’ve lost 83 pounds and it has taken me since September 25, 2013.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Non scale victories are the best!! I always tell everyone not to worry so much about the number on the scale. It feels so much better to have clothes
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My daily diet has changed tremendously. I have always done low carb since I’ve started but I’m very big on telling everyone to eat what you want but do it in a good way with the right portion. Don’t starve yourself but don’t go over board. I used to drink a lot of pop and fast food. Which I do not touch or want anymore.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Really, I’ve always been active. When I was heavier I was still on the cross country and track team. I was slow and always the last to finish but I never cared what anyone thought. I enjoyed it so I did it.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Take lots of before pictures and keep taking them and putting months apart together. You will really see the changes you make and will encourage and help you keep going.
- Keep the positive people close and the negative people away.
- You don’t have to buy any fancy diet plan. Just eat right and every 2 hours.
- Weightlifting burns more than cardio! Don’t be afraid of the weights.
- Always be true to yourself and continue telling yourself you can do it. We all have our days and I’m still struggling but I get myself back up and keep on keeping on.
