All of my life i have been overweight
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? Mentally, emotionally and physically my weight negatively was affecting me every single day of my life. I developed social anxiety’s over my weight- constantly worrying about what everyone else thought of me. It got so bad I would drive somewhere only to turn around and go back home without stepping foot out of my car. I was scared to be seen in public, especially in my own neighborhood. Visiting restaurants meant I had to do “research” ahead of time to make sure they had tables, and not booths (which i rarely fit in) I developed terrible back problems, and numbness in my legs and was put on medication to relax the pain in my back. I was not a pleasant person to be around most of the time, because inside i was crying for help, for change.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? After suffering a slew of embarrassing weight related set backs in prior months, i felt like i hit rock bottom. I got engaged September 2015 and always have said to myself, “when I get engaged I will loose the weight, this is my last chance to commit to getting healthy.” I figured if I couldn’t get it together for my wedding day, I would never find the motivation to do it again.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? Coincidentally, a few months after being engaged my job started a weight watchers at work program and I immediately jumped on board, and never turned back. The support of my coworkers (whom i spend most of my time with at my full time job) really proved to be helpful in staying on track and keeping motivated.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? Right away, i was determined and lost over 7 pounds my first week. I had a few set backs- but overall I am amazed. The feeling of accomplishment is one that I never want to go away. Hearing my parents tell me they are proud of me is something that makes me happiest.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? I was morbidly obese. I was addicted to food, all foods really. I am a creature of habit, getting fast food 3 or 4x a week was habitual- so i always did it. Breaking those habits and training myself to completely stay away from those bad foods was my first hurdle. I would take the shortest route wherever I had to go, avoiding stairs etc. Igniting the flame inside of me-getting my self into a routine schedule was so key. A few months after beginning my journey i joined a gym. I know myself, I was very insecure about the way I looked- so going to a gym was the last place I ever wanted to go. But i did research for my own good, and found a small all women’s gym in a nearby town and created a routine for myself to go straight from work 4 days a week.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? No, the energy, happiness and overall support I have is something I never want to go away. I am addicted to the feeling of being happy and healthy. My upcoming wedding is a huge motivation to me. I have always been the “fat” friend with the pretty face. I want more than anything to make a beautiful bride, and love my wedding photos for years to come.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? YES! Especially as of lately. I have been switching up my workout routine and adding in arm workouts, i am working on the ropes as of last week and BOY do i feel the burn! I try and find new foods also, because I know my body evetually metabolizes if i keep fueling it with the same things.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? I am 8 months into my journey
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Absolutley. I love taking photos of myself now- and I love shopping. In the past I have always had to shop because my clothes were to small. I have gone down from a size 24 to a size 16!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I ate whatever, whenever I wanted-no second thoughts. Now i carefully plan out my meals ahead of time. I pack lunch everyday- I cook dinner. It’s all about planning ahead to be successful for me.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? There was no physical activity. I even work a desk job, so my walk from my car to my desk as the extent of my activity. I would avoid ALL outdoor activities at ALL costs.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- STAY HYDRATED
- DO NOT OBSESS OVER THE SCALE (your weight fluctuates every day, so it’s not accurate if you weigh yourself every day)
- Keep your “WHY” in the back of your mind all the time.
- Take progress pictures, I have a photo of myself from every day since i started. Even when things feel like they are moving slow week to week. I dare you to compare a photo from a few months apart, you will see the changes.
