WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Weight was a problem from me from as early as I can remember. I remember in third grade, this was when we could go to “the big kid” side of the playground.. So I see my friends over there and charge to run, heavy breathing across the wood chip layered playground. Then. A fellow comes next to me and jogs, and yawns in my face and sped up. I remember I played soccer for the “Play to Lose” program, I didn’t get what that meant when I was younger. I remember learning about insulin and diabetes at a young age not even really knowing whaat the heck all this meant. Weight was always a problem. I was the fat kid/friend/sibling/daughter, yup. Me.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was teased behind my back. I couldn’t war the trendy clothes. I didn’t get crushes in school, nobody liked me. I could barely fit on the rides at Cedar Point. I didn’t cheerlead. I always got the front seat when piling in the car as teenagers, (I wanted to be in the back). I waaaaas the smart girl though! Always on the honor roll, so I guess in a sense since I felt alone I was at least in my studies.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I was just tired. Of hating myself. And being unhappy and uncomfortable. In my own skin. It initially started I used to watch I Used to be Fat on MTV and knew I could do it too. I yo-yoed and adopted unhealthy behaviors at first. The journey started at 17 when I was pessimistic and impatient, I am now 22 and think I have a great idea of my body type and how to transform optimally.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I made a choice. To do it. To lose it. For me.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Realistically, since I was pretty overweight, I didn’t see physical results for about a month or so. The numbers were changing but I didn’t feel it or see it but the number on the scale go down the first few weeks to be honest.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Figuring my adequate amount of physical activity and eating because I have a history of fainting since I don’t eat enough or drink enough water. I always had family support. I didn’t tell my friends really, I did it on my own and didn’t talk much about it. I had a gym, that was never an excuse. I didn’t like to exercise for sure but I had to make that choice.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes. So many times! But my desire to change was way greater than staying where I was at. I knew what it felt like to be fat. I wanted to know what it felt like to be okay with where you are. So I am stills going to see what my best looks like. It’s that curiosity and space to know I can be, and will be more / better in life. That things do get better!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes. Plenty of times. And when I did, I switched up my physical activity and ate differently, like didn’t eat bread for 21 days or just decrease my intake in an area.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost 80 pounds over 4 years because life happens, and I was learning myself in stages.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I have more energy. I am happier. I don’t worry about what I look like (as much tbh). I have collar bones. I can breathe easier. I can walk through aisles more comfortably. I can fit rollercoaster rides. I can find something in every store IF I wanted to.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat way more fruits, drink way more water, and don’t eat fast food.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am more consistent with my physical activity. I actually LIKE to go to the gym. It is my therapy now.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Drink water. Be thirsty.
- Pick a physical activity that is fun or at least tolerable for you. This journey is for life. Might as well make it tolerable. Make it Fun!
- Eat breakfast. EVERY DAY.
- SLEEP! You must sleep. And you must have a rest day.
