I started developing a weight problem around 2011. I believe that it started because I was a year away from graduating from college and completely dissatisfied with life. I was not sure if I had made the right decision about my major, I lacked a social life, and college life was the opposite of everything I thought it would be. I ate to feel happy. I ate because I was bored. I also ate to get the experience of eating foods from restaurants that were not available in my hometown or that my mother (who eats healthy) did not purchase.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? Two incidents sparked my motivation. In one incident, I took my nephew to a theme park. I was so excited that he was going to ride the first roller coaster that I had ever ridden. I tried to get in and I had to allow him to ride alone because I could not fit. In another incident, I wanted to fulfill an activity that I had been wanting to pursue for years, skydiving.
I called to make a reservation and the company informed me that there was absolutely nothing that they could do to accommodate my weight. I have always wanted to pursue outdoorsy, adventurous activities, but my rapid weight gain impaired me.
I also became afraid of attending certain social events and taking full length pictures. I became a “selfie expert” and was offended when people would offer to take a full length picture of me. I rarely bought clothes and when I would try on several clothes that did not fit, I would go to the nearest food court and eat to feel better.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS TRANSFORMATION? My turning point occurred during the roller coaster and skydiving incidents that I mentioned!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I contacted a healthy lifestyle coach and began using her diet plan and ItWorks products. Then, I began participating in group exercise training.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? I did not begin to notice changes in my body until after I began the JJ Smith 10 Day Smoothie cleanse 4 months into my journey.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR TRANSFORMATION? I had to overcome the fact that I used food to medicate several issues ( anxiety, stress, depression). I had to find new coping skills and that was difficult at first. I also had difficulty with finding other activities to engage in with my friends and other ways to treat myself.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? Yes! I wanted to give up several times.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? I did and I overcame them by scheduling my “cheat days” and incorporating smoothie cleanses into my diet.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? 1 year
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? I fit into my plane seat very comfortably on vacation. I also took and posted several “non-selfie” photos of my vacation.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I ate because I was bored, I ignored portions, I ate when I was sad, stressed, and lonely. I ate at sit-downs restaurants several times per week. I rarely ate fruits and vegetables and I loved sodas. I remember having big projects and drinking most of a 12-pack of soda in a day.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I did not work out often when I was heavier, sometimes once per month. I did not enjoy working out. Now I enjoy jogging on the treadmill and HIIT routines.

- I made a list of activities that I can do with friends that are not food related.
- Motivational Instagram weight loss journey pages were some of the first things I looked at in the morning.
- I said no to invitations that would tempt me to eat unhealthy foods or that would upset me because I was not eating unhealthy foods.
