WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Back in middle school, 7th grade. I got my photos taken and my face was as round as an egg! I tried every diet that my parents would let me and nothing changed. Some of it I blamed on genetics and some due to going from a pre teen to teen to a young lady.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I had low self esteem, no confidence. I had friends but found out my first boyfriend didn’t like me as much as I thought. He was in a bet with his friends to see how long he could stay with me.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After having my first in 2006 I put on a lot of weight. I didn’t gain any during pregnancy because I was diagnosed with hyperemisisparidium (What duchess Kate has). I also was in a bad relationship and hated life in general. After leaving and moving home I knew I needed to do something for myself and my daughter. I didn’t do anything extreme. I walked, did some old VHS tapes my mom had and watched what I ate.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
From 06-13 I would lose weight and put it on. I found diets aren’t long term nor should they be a term because they aren’t real. After having my second child in 2013 I put all the weight back on. January 2016 I set my years goal to get into shape. I had a goal in mind but had no clue of how it would pan out since I felt I failed one too many time before. I found an app called “The Ultimate Food Value Diary” it’s like Weight Watchers but there’s a one time fee and no meetings. As a Stay at Home Mom my income was tiny. So WW was no option.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It took a few months. I started feeling more energetic and that my skin cleared up and that I did not sweat as much. I noticed small changes. It wasn’t until recently that I saw bigger changes.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I have always like exercising but I got tired of doing the same things. I love challenges and switching things up. I found a book at my local Dollar Tree and fell in love! I work out two times a day for 20 minutes. Mornings are either cardio or core and nights are upper or lower. I didn’t think working out so little would add up but it did!
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I have had many time I wanted to stop. In fact I have. My kids have kept me going. Wanting to do things with them, and my daughter loves finding clothes for me and most of the time what she would pick would not be available in my size.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I have had many plateaus. I’m currently having one. I rethink my eating, water intake, my workouts. I have found food is the big key and having plenty of water.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost half of it between 06-15 but the biggest change was losing 33 this year! I have never done that well and all by making small changes over time. I.e. Drinking more water, working out once a day (currently two times) and most of all food! Portion control is my best friend! I use my app “The Ultimate Food Value Diary” to put in my food and to get a number. It really helps especially when I’m grocery shopping and find something and have to tell myself is that worth those points or could those points be better used on something else!
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I love getting on swings with my kids. Before the chains would dig into my hips and hurt. I also love telling my daughter to pick me out something when we go out shopping. I went from an XL top to a Medium! I was a 18/20 bottom and now I’m a 10/12!!! Talk about a confidence boost and the fact my daughter loves being my personal fashion consultant!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Before I eyed everything as I put it on my plate. My eyes were always bigger then my stomach but I didn’t care. I never read labels on or wanted to spend a lot on food. Now? I don’t mind spending 3 on salad or fruits or veggies knowing they fuel my body longer and don’t burn off as fast as carbs do. I don’t deprive myself of treats my favorite being French fries from McDonalds and their M&M McFlurry (I get a snack size of both) I find that keeps me less stressed thus more energy to wanna work out and not fill myself with stress and then I fall off of the wagon.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was a couch potato. But now I try to not sit down but ever two hours to rest my legs (I have had clots in both so they swell and it can hurt and I’ve had my acl, mcl and patella replaced) I know once I sit in done for the day so any chance to burn calories while the days going I love it. I love organizing so that gets me moving everywhere and thinking a lot!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Set mini goals! Don’t look at the big picture but rather the journey!
- Moderation not Deprivation! If you want that burger or fries do it, but don’t over do it. You won’t lose weight from eatin one salad not gain from one burger!
- Get the family involved! Have your kids cook with you or challenge them to try new foods with you.
- Water is best when flavored! I have a hard time getting my water in but adding fruit or flavor drops really helps me and makes me touch soft drinks less and less.
- You will have bad days but remember it’s a bad day not a bad life. Start over asap. Not Monday or the first of the month. Everyday is a chance to start again!
