What was the “turning point” that prompted you to lose weight?

I was a serial yo-yo dieter with a bad body image for years! It wasn’t until the birth of my son, Ryan, that I started to realize all my dieting was doing more harm than good. It was time to stop the cycle and accept myself while working on doing better.

When did you start trying to lose weight?

I started two weeks after Ryan was born and never looked back. It was July 1, 2005.

How did you get started?

I attended weekly Weight Watchers meetings and started food journaling. I took walks almost daily. I also started a weight-loss blog to help track my progress.

What was your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge for me was to actually stick with it! I had such a history of abandoning diets in the past.

Were there times when you wanted to quit or give up? How did you stay motivated?

Having the blog as an outlet helped me stay motivated. It gave me an external distraction to focus on. I started to really enjoy writing my weekly update posts.

If you reached a weight loss plateau, how did you break out of the rut?

For me it’s always about finding something new. Whether it’s changing how I food-journal, trying a new workout, or experimenting in the kitchen, I thrive on new experiences. That keeps me motivated.

What’s your current exercise routine?

I have recently fallen in love with CrossFit and go four to five times a week. Every class is different and it really challenges me! I also enjoy at least one to two runs a week.

What’s your daily diet look like?

  • Normally I eat eggs or oatmeal for breakfast.
  • Lunch is leftovers or, honestly, sushi or a fast food salad.
  • I cook most dinners at home and go with a lean protein, veggie and small starch – sometimes even double veggies.
  • And my snacks are normally non-fat Greek yogurt topped with fruit and nuts, Laughing Cow cheese smeared on cucumbers, popcorn or jerky.

What’s your favorite healthy snack or meal?

I have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with popcorn, but my new favorite go-to snack is Cranberry Topped Cheese and Cucumber “Crackers,” where I use cucumbers slices as a cracker substitute.

Do you have specific suggestions for avoiding temptations?

For me, it’s about working with my cravings and temptations. Getting creative in the kitchen and enjoying the process of discovering new and healthy foods instead of looking at it as a chore or punishment. Success is in how we approach things. I try to look at things as a fun challenge.

What’s your life like after weight loss?

Honestly, my life is completely differently, but it didn’t happen overnight. The process of losing weight for me was a lot about building confidence and gaining a better body image. I’m the same person, of course, but I now feel like I’m living the active life I was meant to live.

If you have any suggestions to others what would they be?

Years ago, I wrote a blog called ‘Stateless Dieting’ about overcoming the “all or nothing” mentality. That’s my best piece of advice.

Recently, I shared five of my most personal weight loss tips in a post titled, ‘How Did I REALLY Lose the Weight?’
