WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
In 1975 after the birth of my third child. I had gained over 40 lbs during my pregnancy, I have never completely lost it all. I have had yo-yo weight loss and gained over and above what I lost.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
At 4’11” tall, being overweight was devastating. It was beginning to take a toll on both my physical and mental health. I would get depressed and not want to be seen in public. My breathing was impaired, and I had no energy.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I was visiting my daughter during the Christmas/New Year holiday in December 2011. During an outing at the lake where her boat was docked, I had an episode of what I thought was asthma (I have never had asthma) after a short walk from the parking lot to the boat. It took about 15 minutes before I was able to breathe normally. I had never experienced that before.
My daughter had joined Weight Watchers and suggested I do the same.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
When I returned home in January 2012, I made my New Year’s resolution to do something about my weight. At first I started walking around the neighborhood. My husband had purchased a WII Fit console for me, and I started using that as well. I actually lost 5 lbs in one month. I knew I would not continue this on my own from previous history, so on Feb. 4, 2012 I joined Weight Watchers.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
The first week on the Weight Watchers program, I lost another 3 lbs. This kick started my motivation and determination to reach my goal.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I loved to eat, but I was also a “bored” eater. I ate when I was bored, while I was watching TV, or just because it was there. I did not like exercise as it seemed too much like work. However, I learned that one of the main keys to losing weight and keeping it off is exercise. After I reached my goal I was, to say the least, a little flabby. I had to tone up, so I joined a gym and obtained a personal trainer. That was the beginning of a whole new chapter in my life.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I was able to stay on track with Weight Watchers, due to the support of the group and the great program they have. It was easy and I never felt like I was the only one with an eating problem. I learned how to eat healthy without depriving myself of the foods I liked.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I have hit several plateaus, but I learned how to change my routine to get past them. Your body gets used to the same calorie intake and the same exercises. You have to “shock” your body into burning calories and fat again by changing your food selections and exercise different parts of your body. Increase your cardio routine.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost 56 lbs in 10 months. On Feb. 4, 2012 I weighed in at 181.8 lbs .
In December 8, 2012 I weighed 125.6.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I have had many non-scale victories, but the most gratifying for me was putting on clothes that were too big. My Weight Watcher’s leader suggested that when our clothes got too big, we get rid of them. By keeping them, you are giving yourself a psychological “security blanket”, permission to gain some weight back. As clothes got too big for me, I would put them in a bag to go to charity. After I got rid of 3 complete outfits, I would reward myself with at last 2 new outfits.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Now I eat healthier. I eat more fruits and vegetables. I watch fats and carbohydrates.
No more fast food or mindless eating. I have better portion control and a colorful plate. I have learned to say “No thank you” with confidence and no guilt. I do not allow myself to be pressured into eating something I know is not good for me or that may be a trigger for me to overdo it.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My energy level has gone through the roof. I exercise in group boot camp and TRX workouts 4 days week for one hour each time. I actually enjoy it. I miss it when I can’t go. I was able to jog 5 miles a few months ago in my boot camp group. I refinished my kitchen cabinets by myself, and I pulled up carpet in three rooms so we could get new flooring.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Most important – MOVE THAT BODY! The trick to keeping your weight off is exercise. Diet alone will not do it.
- Join a gym, weight loss program that fits you. Ask your doctor if are healthy enough for an exercise program.
- Eat smaller meals, more often. Keep a healthy snack available, such as raw carrot sticks, celery, fruits. Drink more water, low calorie drinks to help fill you up. Whenever you get a craving for something sweet, eat a pickle! It takes the craving away.
- Learn to say “no”. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s okay just this one time. You know what triggers your “binging” or overeating. It’s okay to say “No thank you”. True friends and supporters won’t fault you for it. This is your body and your well-being. You are doing it for you, not them.
- Don’t tell yourself or let anyone tell you that you are too old to exercise. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER!. Depending on your overall health and physical condition (again, ask your doctor), you can get healthier and more fit in no time by exercising. I am a 64 year old grandmother of 4 ranging in age from 15 – 20, and I can tell you that I am probably in better physical condition than they are. Without a doubt, I am in the best shape of my life, and I feel great!
