WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Over the years, I did play very competitive sports but I never ate the way your body was meant to eat.I also was a life long alcoholic but never in my life admitted it.I was parting every night and just getting bigger and bigger. I was at my heaviest at 220 lbs at age of 44.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was trying to tie my boots for work one morning,and couldn’t……Even with my gut hanging over my pants and not being able to tie my shoes I still was in the same “life” rut and made no changes!
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
Like I stated at the beginning of this entry…I was a life long alcoholic..I partied like a rock star and pretty much lived the rock and roll life style.At age of 13 I took my first drink and in tell 3 years ago I never new my self not to have a drink in my hand.On September 20 2011 I drank more than most people should,I drank around 20 shots of Vodka and a 6 pack of beer…and got up for work the next day!..I am not a religious person..but something in side me told me I was done parting..and that was over 3 years ago!…I have not had a drink and have turned my life around 100%…
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Still.. after being sober and trying to figure out life as a sober person, I still felt like crap!…I was going to the gym and lifting weights..but that was just getting me bigger…I was pre -hypertension,pre diabetic,high cholesterol,over weight etc…basically I was a ticking time bomb..waiting for a heart attack!..I was at the gym one day I looked over at a treadmill…I was like..Whats that all about?…So I got on this thing that I had no clue how to even start…and I was off…I walked some,then slowly increased the speed and before long I was building up a sweat!…I was experimenting with the treadmill for about 30 days just to make sure I could survive with out falling over and making sure my knees would hold up!…After all that I thought I would go out on the road and go for little adventures…I would run for like 30 minutes,head back home..jump in the car..hit the trip gauge on the car and drive the route I just ran!…I had no GPS tracking or smart-phone at the time!…I came home and told my wife…Holy Crap I just ran 2.8 miles!….And that is the the starting of my life changing “ME”
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started noticing that my face was getting thinner around the 3 month range..It is so hard to see the weight loss on your self…but it was awesome when other people in your life start asking…are you loosing weight!…
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The hardest part for me was choosing to eat right!….We cut out all fastfood and greasy fries and things that we would eat like it was normal.For 1 full year we went vegetarian….I full believe that cleaned out my system…We would eat fresh fruit,veggies..bread,yogurt and such!…..
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Being this was a new lifestyle…I just wanted to keep exploring and seeing and feeling the benefits.You see and here all the great things that eating right and exercising can do…and I wanted to find out for my self!…
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
after loosing 55 lbs, I did hit a weight loss wall….I was kind of stuck at that point!…But I had already lost 55 lbs so I new I could do it!…I was still running 20 miles a week and eating right right but something started changing in the way I was feeling!..I was starting to forget things all the time!I made a doctors appointment and found out that as much running as I am doing I was not consuming enough food to burn!….So..basically my body was burning brain cells for fuel as I was running!…After a few consultations with the Doctor, She put me on a better food diet…So…I learned how to eat right to maintain a active life style!
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
Most of my weight was off in the first 5 months…..After that, It was all about maintaining my eating choices and running.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
The first 5k I ran..I was like..what the heck do I do?……I was over weight..had all these “fit” runner people around me..and I had no clue what I was doing!…all I new is I didn’t want to stop….When I crossed that finish line…it was the most rewarding victory I have ever felt!….I still continue running 20 miles a week…I have competed in over 50 races…At the beginning of my running experience I was a 12 to 13 minute mile guy!….I run about 7:30-8:15 a mile currently.My favorite race is the half marathon…In my last Half Marathon, I finished 167th out of 1500…Average pace for 13.1 miles was 8:14….
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
my daily diet is fresh fruit and veggies,yogurt,bread…some grilled chicken breast,peanut butter and yes even a slice of pizza…But even with the pizza..it is all in moderation!….
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
So…at the beginning of this new life journey everything was so new to me.I just new that it was the right thing to do!…I figured I cant take back what I have done in the past..but I can sure refocus and restructure my future!….I have to date,I created a local runners group in our town!,…Have trained more than 7 local folks that would like to change there life also!…The runners group has raised over 1,700 lbs of food and around 700$ for the local food bank as we host “fun” runs for the local food bank!..I am on the health and wellness board at my place of employment! and try to live a non-judgmental life style with a positive out look as much as I can!…..
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Being “SLOW” Is so ok…….Baby steps are still steps…and there great!…..
- All ways know that ‘YOU ARE AWESOME”…..and sometime the fear is the toughest thing you will face!…..but.. there are tons of places for support!…not just in trying to get healthy..but for every “life” situation there is…you are not alone!….
- I challenge my group members to do a 30 day challenge!….just try eating right..walking at lunch hour..eating a apple instead of a bag of chips for a snack…it all starts with the small things….
- my greatest saying is…….”Have you found your day 1 yet”?….It all starts with day 1..and don’t let outside negative things pull you down!
