WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Around 5 years ago, I became quite complacent… “comfortable” in a new marriage, over indulging in meals out, rich foods and not really thinking about what food I put past my lips! The weight slowly piled on, bit by bit… Before I knew it, I’d gone from a size 12, to a size 16…
My husband and I decided to plan a child together, and I got into the mindset of “well I’m going to get fat anyway, so it doesn’t matter”.. so by the time I conceived (March 2014), I had reached 13.5st/size 18… I continued to eat rich foods during my pregnancy, including a 4 month craving for any fresh cream meringue I could get my hands on.. I didn’t really notice how fat I had gotten, and even after giving birth, I blamed it all on “just having had a baby”. Then came more excuses to eat fast/on the go foods, as my breastfeeding journey began.. And on piled another stone, so by the time I decided enough was enough, my baby girl was 12 months old and I was nearly 15st and a size 20!
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
The weight gain made me lethargic, depressed with my whole body shape, upset that I couldn’t wear anything short of a “tent” for clothing.. It stopped me from swimming (an activity I enjoyed a lot previously), as I couldn’t bear to see myself in swimwear.. I was constantly hungry, and tired.. And generally down.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
When my baby girl started walking, and I felt I couldn’t keep up with her… And having to go to a fitting room as nothing fit, and discovering that a size 20 was getting too small too…
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I asked on a local Facebook page if anyone could recommend a local Slimming World group, a few ladies came back to me, and I took the plunge!
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I lost weight at every weigh in, but I think it was around 3.5 months in, when I dropped a couple of trouser sizes, that I really noticed the results showing.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Childcare was an issue for me as I’m a military wife who’s husband is away quite often… So I found I had to take my children with me to group which wasn’t always easy…
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
A couple of times I’ve felt like not so much giving up, but like having some “off plan nights”, especially after having maintains etc, but the image therapy at group has kept me focused, as well as posting all the food I east to various social media pages , which has not only helped me to stay on track but also opened up many avenues of support too!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I’m currently taking a lot of medication for bulging discs/nerve issues affecting my neck/shoulder/arm.. my weight loss has slowed a lot just lately too.. I’m not sure if the two are linked at all (as have been strict on plan throughout)… But with the help of my group consultant/members and support through social media, I’ve managed to stay focused on the long term..
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Being able to wear my wedding ring for the first time in 4+ years, dropping 4 dress sizes, From a 20 to a 12 and being able to chase my toddler around the park!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat a lot more, more regularly, more varied foods, a lot more fruit/veg
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I couldn’t do much at all before, now I walk everywhere I can, always take the stairs, and don’t get out of breath doing simple tasks
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Preparation – meal plan, batch cook, get lots of cookbooks on the go! The more foods you find that you enjoy the better, as it keeps things fresh!
- If you are on Slimming World.. STAY FOR GROUP! The support is invaluable!
- Don’t deprive yourself of the things you enjoy, seek out lower synned alternatives, have a “within syn treat” if you want one..
- Don’t cut out your carbs! Our body needs the energy that they provide.. Just make sure you take your 1/3 speed foods on your plate too!
- Don’t guesstimate! Weigh/measure/count all of your syns/healthy extras! Just a few ml here, and a few grams there, over your allowance, can soon mound up to a lot!
