WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
My mother passed away in 2010. Battling depression due to her loss and the stress and anxiety of an unhealthy marriage, I packed on weight, turning to food, mainly carbs and sugar, for comfort.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was not able to be as active as I once was, especially with my children, literally in pain if I overdid activities. I was very self-conscious, always covering myself up, and compared myself to everyone I saw.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
In 2015 I suffered two DVTs (blood clots) in my right calf, partly due to a sedentary lifestyle. I also sing on our worship team at church and seeing how large I had become in our videos really set the pace for my lifestyle change. That person was not me, I needed to love myself again.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I cut sugar out of my diet, and started to eat clean. I began working out with DVDs 3 times week and free weights. When I could run again, I did that, mountain biked, hiked, and eventually joined a gym to lift.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Within the first month but friends didn’t really notice until after 3-4 months.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
It was painful for my feet and calves/shins when I first started out, especially trying to run, which is what I liked to do before having children.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I did not want to give up. Once I started seeing results, I become addicted. Feeling more energetic and getting compliments imspired me too.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Not really, I steadily but slowly lost in a consistent basis.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
10 months to lose 45 pounds but about 15 months to become lean and muscular.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes….my jeans! Went from a 12 to a 4.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was definitely an emotional eater! Stress was my trigger. I also work from home so it was way too easy to rummage through the pantry throughout the day.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I did not work out when I was at my top weight. Now I train 5 days a week, implementing HIIT and weight training (which has always been a passion of mine).
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I wore workout clothes to my son’s soccer practices so I had zero excuse to not work out.
- I did meal prep some.
- Not watching TV, and laying off Facebook
- Drank up to a gallon of water a day
