WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was always a chunky kid and I remember as far back as 8 years old that I started thinking about how I needed to lose weight.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight has always fluctuated, but it correlated to my mood no doubt. Whenever I was heavier and out of shape, I would become moody, depressed and my confidence plummeted. I have ruined a lot of relationships over the years due to the depression that was caused by my being overweight. I would do things like miss a lot of work after a binge session or cancel plans because I felt “too big”. It was awful.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I have been on a weight loss journey for as long as I can remember but the final straw was about a year ago. I went to Burger King, bought TWO burgers, and not the value burgers. I’m talking about burgers so substantial that they had numbers assigned to them. On top of that, I bought the largest Dr. Pepper they offered, a large fry, AND a large order of onion rings. I snuck the food into my house, went straight to my room, and devoured all of the things I bought in under 30 minutes. About 10 minutes after I binged, I felt awful. Something just clicked after that. I got pissed! I couldn’t believe that I had allowed myself to get so out of control. That was it. Two days later I turned my life around and I haven’t look back since!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
After my ultimate low last fall, I started the Whole30 regime but for 90 days instead of the recommended 30 days. About a month into the program, I found a free workout program on BodyBuilding.com called Jamie Eason’s Livefit 12 Week Transformation.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
With the Whole30, it’s a pretty drastic program which is why they only recommend to do it for 30 days. Because of all the foods I cut out, I started to see results immediately. I believe I lost about 17 lbs that first month alone!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
My biggest challenge was not taking a cheat meal and turning it into a downhill spiral. I used to be bulimic in high school so that’s where I began the vicious eating marathons. As an adult, I cut out bulimia and just binged. Neither is better or worse than the other but the mindset was the nearly the same: very toxic. Even now that I’m not as overcome with guilt when I eat a “bad” food, I still feel shame sometimes that I fell off track. I also get really fearful that I’ll return to old ways.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
There were plenty of times that I wanted to give up and a lot of times I did. Although I am not proud of those moments of weakness, they’ve made me as strong as I am today. I just remind myself of how worthy I am of the love that I’m providing my body and that is what keeps me going!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes! For the longest time, I could not break 180 lbs. I worked hard, I ate well but no matter what I did, I was never under 180. After much trial and tribulation, I figured out that I needed to change up my workout routine and my diet. Oh! I also learned that I needed to KEEP GOING. I always gave up and reverted to old ways as soon as things got tough. Not anymore. I know now that the feeling of achieving your goals even after turmoil is better than any piece of cake or pizza.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost the bulk of the weight (about 25 lbs) over the course of about 2 months.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Absolutely! These are what made me want to continue more than the number on the scale. I am have begun to sleep better, I have more energy throughout the day, I don’t get hot and sweaty as easily, my confidence has sky rocketed, I know self discipline and determination, and my ambition is amped all the way up.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Before, I ate whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. Literally. For example, I would order an entire pizza, some wings and then finish off with a whole pint or two of ice cream. Now, I still eat just about whatever I want but maintain a certain calorie range, I eat 5 times a day (every 2-3 hours) and I am very conscious about the value of the food that I’m digesting. Yes, I still eat pizza, wings, and ice cream– just not as often or in such large proportions. Everything is fine in moderation!
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I completely stopped working out when I was heavier. Not only was I lazy/unmotivated but I was also so self conscious about what the people at the gym would think of a big girl like me working out. Thank goodness I have overcome that fear because now I go to the gym 4-6 times a week and I could care less about anybody else in the gym.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Find a support system! Whether it’s a gym buddy, an online group or even a pen pal. You can go so much further when you have somebody rooting for your success!
- DRINK WATER! Water is so essential for the body to function and be healthy. I cannot stress this enough.
- Find a handful of staple meals that you enjoy and are simple to make (avocado & egg toast, chicken & veggies, oatmeal & berries, etc.). This helps tremendously on days you lose creativity in the kitchen or when you’re not motivated to .
- Don’t beat yourself up if you’re not seeing results as quickly as you’d like or if you fall off track. Pick your panties up and try again!
- Just do it. Cut the bull. Stop trying to cut corners. Get down and dirty with your fitness and make sh*t happen.
