WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
When I was in high school I was apart of a highly competitive soccer team. Our team broke up when I was around 16 years old and since then I’d say I gained 100 lbs in about 8 to 9 years.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Gaining weight happened fairly quickly. It didn’t affect me too much right away because I had a boyfriend who loved me and my life continued on as normal. When I was about 23 and 24 I became so heavy that I had muscle and joint pains. It was difficult for me to get off couches and out of bed. I was winded after doing one flight of stairs and I was growing lyrics frustrated with myself. I couldn’t comfortably fit in bus seats or movie theatre seats, I avoided sitting in booths at restaurants, and refused to be photographed.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I just one day realized that wow I’m 25 and I’m in pain when I wake up. My resting heart rate was 84 and I just got fed up with the position I was in. I knew I had to step up and get control of my life.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I got a fitbit which has really helped and have been using myfitnesspal. I then began an Instagram account in order to be motivated and to be motivating.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I felt the effects pretty quickly –
probably a week in. I didn’t actually notice it until at least a month and even then I had a hard time seeing it.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The mental challenge is the biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome. I have spent years telling myself I can’t do it, I can’t be successful, I am not capable, etc. It’s been difficult altering my mindset but it has been the most rewarding so far.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Often! I do my best to keep myself motivated by taking lots of pictures and comparing them. It really helps because sometimes I don’t see the changes in the mirror but when I compare them I really do.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I did for about a month. It was again a mental battle. I can, I will, became the words I repeated to myself.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I am still in my journey but a lot of the weight came off pretty quickly. It started to plateau when I started lifting heavy weights.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Many ! Clothes fitting that never did, fitting in airplane seats better, my engagement ring is now a full size too big!!!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
WATER. I do not drink ANYTHING but water or sparkling water. I have an occasional glass of milk (maybe once a month) and a few glasses of wine (once a month). I still eat what I like but I’m now in control of my portion sizes.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am much more active and willing to be active. Soccer games are twice a week and am working out 3X a week.
