I started gaining weight my senior year in high school. I was going through a lot of family issues, worked late which meant I ate late and typically it was fast food and I was partying a lot to cope with all the struggles going on in my life.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? I became self conscious, tired and overall just unhappy. I probably wasn’t as nice to my boyfriend at the time as I should’ve been because I just wasn’t happy with where or what I was doing with my own life.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I saw a picture of myself from a New Year’s Eve party and was horrified. I didn’t even recognize the girl I was staring at.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? As cliche as it sounds, I actually started New Years Day and never looked back. I went on a run that morning, made sure I ate “healthy” all day and eventually I bought workout videos and started working out 5 days a week.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? It was only a couple of months before I noticed I was actually losing weight.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? I think the biggest obstacle for me was learning to love myself through the process.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? You know its strange, I never had the urge to just quit but I would definitely get frustrated when I wasn’t as “fit” as I wanted to be.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? I did, so I started reading on fitness and nutrition and changed my diet and workout regimes.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? To be honest, it probably took a good 8 months or so because I turned 21 and started going out and drinking more with friends.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Absolutely! I found a new passion and changed my career from a desk job to becoming a certified personal trainer! I think that’s been the best victory over all. Because I started taking care of myself, I found my confidence, learned to be kind to myself, started chasing my dreams (I started racing stock cars which I’ve always wanted to do since I was a little girl) and now I’m living a life that I absolutely love with all my heart!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? When I was heavier, I ate a lot of fast food. I didn’t watch what I ate at all! When I first started exercising, I was eating better but not what you would call nutritious. I was only eating rice cakes in the morning, small salads at lunch and 100 calorie packs for snacks. However, now that I’ve educated myself on eating right, I eat 5-6 small meals a day. I eat more fresh veggies and fruits, whole grains, and protein. I also take whey protein shakes right after my workouts. I use to meal prep when I was single but now that I’m married and my husband despises veggies, i meal prep occasionally for myself. I allow myself a slight cheat meal or treat at least once a week. My alcohol consumption is to a minimum.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? When I was heavier, I would get very uncomfortable and embarrassed doing anything physically challenging. Now I welcome the challenge and love to give myself a good hard workout!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- I totally slept in my workout clothes the night before especially when I started getting up at 5:30 in the morning to be at the gym at 6am! I also packed my gym bag the night before!
- I also use to buy clothes that were a size too small and hang them on my walls as motivation. Every week I’d try them on until it fit!
- If you live with a person like my husband who doesn’t like to workout or eat veggies, slip them veggies in their morning smoothies! Also, stay strong and be the one who leads the family into a healthier lifestyle!
- Reward yourself! After you reach a goal, go out and buy yourself some new Nikes or workout clothes, it is SO satisfying!
