Weight Loss Stories
187 Pounds Lost: From couch potato to personal trainer
NAME : Caitlin
BEFORE WEIGHT : 332
AFTER WEIGHT : 145
POUNDS LOST : 187
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was a child and only 8 years old when it started. I would sneak food out of my kitchen run up to my bedroom and lay it all out on my bed like prized posessions before I sat there devouring it and being proud that I got away it.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight affected my relationships, my education, my family and my mind. Even tying my shoes was hard for me. People never realize just how much weight affects you until you lose it all and you don’t have those same struggles any longer.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
an old friend of mine asked me if I was pregnant and I was so humiliated I drove home that day crying so hard I could barely see my steering wheel. I had never even been pregnant before and while I knew I was bigger I had no idea I was as big as I was..I was in complete denial.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
i started with counting calories and ditching all fast food. I started drinking more water and began a walking program in my living room..because I was to scared to do it outside in public.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
it was about 3 months in when i really noticed a difference..although i was receiving compliments after the first 4 weeks.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The hardest part was learning that this is a lifestyle change and that for the rest of my life I have to be careful. For some reason I just put weight in easily and now that I know how to keep it off I just have to. This is my full time job
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
every day I wanted to give up..but each time I would think back to my most humiliating moments and that almost always helped me stay on track
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I did in January 2013 I was stuck at 193 pounds and had been for 9 months..I did research on clean eating and slowly made the switch. I realized I needed to eat smaller portions and more often instead of skipping breakfast like I tended to do. Once I made the switch the weight started coming off again.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
4 years
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
all the time! Because I lift weights my scale doesnt go down as much but my clothing sizes do.
My non scale victories are the fact that in 4 years I dropped so much weight by myself..the healthy way. I blogged about it and wrote a book..I became a certified trainer and the rest is history!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I actually eat more now than before but its healthier smarter options.
I never ate breakfast before and barely lunch..I would binge on pizza and pasta followed by cake and pies late at night.
Now I eat a smart breakfast and then eat every 3 hours after that just smaller portions
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I workout 5 days a week with weight lifting and light cardio and I love it! Before my journey i never did anything, i never even played sports.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- keep an emotion journal and document the time of day the emotion you’re feeling and write down what you would eat if it was in front of you..seeing that on paper helps stop it from happening!
- take it one day at a time especially if you have a lot of weight to lose
- set small attainable goals instead of focusing on the exact amount you want to lose
- dont let your weekends ruin the hard work you did all week long. Be strong 6 days a week and have one cheat meal one day per week.
- Drink lots of water

With that drastic of a weight loss done healthily over time, do you or did you have the excess skin that so many complain about after a large drop in weight? If so how did you deal with it or have you done anything about it? My husband just passed 4 months ago and I have put on weight that puts me over the 300 mark. I’m completely embarassed about exercising in public and I never was before. My kids gained weight as well – still in the healthy range but higher than they should be for 11 and 12 year olds so I want to make this a life long change and not a diet plan. Your story is inspiring because it wasn’t a “look how much I lost and how fast I did it” story.
