WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I started gaining weight way before I was a teenager at the age of 10-11.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was an introvert, I stayed at home because I hated my body and did not want to socialize. Even while in high school, I was bullied and would go and “hide” in the library. I could not deal with it and finished my last two years of High School in independent studies. My morbid obesity throughout my adulthood influenced my life so much; from personal relationships to self confidence and low self esteem issues.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
In April 2010, I was diagnosed with Diabetes, it was an eye opener for me. I wasn’t even 30 years old and already a Diabetic!.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I attempted to lose weight on my own so many times; tried fad diets, diet pills, multiple doctors & specialists but was just never able to lose the weight permanently. Until December of 2011; I underwent Gastric Bypass Surgery.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
The first month I lost 38 lbs, and from then on my weight dropped significantly each month; until 12 months later after my surgery I reached my goal weight of 150 lbs, my lowest weight was 135 lbs.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
When I first started I could not exercise much because I would get short of breath, but I pushed through.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes, in the beginning I missed food so much, watching others eat around me was the hardest.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes I did, when the scale would not move I would get so frustrate because I was on a low calorie diet and not losing weight sometimes the scale wouldn’t move for 2-3 weeks

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took me 1 year to get to my goal weight of 150 lbs.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
So many!! I could go on roller coasters, airplane seat belts fit perfect, no more medications for Diabetes or High Blood Pressure, as well as no C-PAP machine, but the most important; my self confidence and self esteem.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I avoid junk food as much as I can, and eating out too. I eat more whole foods such as lean proteins, vegetables and fruits.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Totally did a 360 degree turn, I wasn’t much active at my biggest, but now I consistently have a weight lifting routine and cardio.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Never give up just because the scale won’t move; keep going.
  2. Small gradual changes; and work yourself up to good habits.
  3. Break bad habits; one by one. Don’t burden yourself by “quitting cold turkey” on all your bad habits.
  4. Do not weight until you are “done” losing weight to try weight lifting! Do a combination of both; cardio & strength training for optimal results!.
  5. Do not think of this a “diet” but a lifestyle change. There is no finish line, no need to rush, and most importantly never compare yourself or your journey to anyone else.
