I started gaining as a child. As a child, I was a little sick but active. But I also had a rough upbringing and the way I coped with it was eating. At around 21 years old I had ballooned up to 350lbs.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? My weight made it really difficult to live. I was never social, always reclusive, I was tired just walking up the stairs in any public place. I didn’t have a social or romantic life and it also made my illnesses a lot worse.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? I ended up in the hospital. The again. Then again. Then again. Then again…So in 2011 when I saw Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson return to the WWE looking fitter than ever, it lit a fire under me. I have my transformation video on YouTube under “MulattoBeast” as well.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I took it slow. I just walked around the block 1 time and lesson my portions. I would ease myself into healthier eating, counting calories and macronutrients, to dong P90X and Insanity, and in 2013 I started strength training and never looked back.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? It took about 3 weeks for me to see progress. Within my first 8 months I lost 40lbs. Then I lost another 40lbs with P90X and Insanity. Then lost the rest of my weight with strength training.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? My illnesses were the biggest problem. Hitting the gym and getting sick. It made it really difficult to get by.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? Of course, but 2 things kept me going: The Rock always working out and giving great advice…and the fact that if my illnesses ever take me, it will not because I gave up.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? I definitely hit plateaus. But the thing you gotta do is keep trying, go back to the drawing board and figure out whats going on. Need to eat more? Need to change the way I workout? Be more aggressive? You always have to readjust your way of tackling it. Then you can break them.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? This whole journey has taken me a whole 7 years.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Yes! I went from not being able to do dips, push ups, or a pull up. Now I can do all of them WITH extra weight attached to me.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? When I was bigger, there was a lot of frozen pizza bites, microwave meals, and fast food. Now it’s whole foods precisely measured to my convenience.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? When I was heavier I was not active at all (except when I was a child, I was into sports). Now I am in the gym AT LEAST 3 times a week and workout at home AT LEAST 2 times a week.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Incoperate lots of whole healthy foods into your diet.
- Exercise at least 3 times a weef for at least 30 min
- Drink AT LEAST two liters of water a day
- Get plenty of sleep
- Hope. Have hope, and allow yourself to mess up sometimes. This journey isn’t perfect for anyone. It DOES get hard, but you can do it!
