140 Pounds Lost: The Gym Is My Temple Giving Me A Place To Lose Over 100 Pounds Rehabilitating A Leg Missing An Inch Of Bone With A Fused Ankle
NAME : Amber
BEFORE WEIGHT : 310
AFTER WEIGHT : 170
POUNDS LOST : 140
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have had a weight problem my entire life. Lost the first over 100 pounds before I was 20 years old. The second time was due to an injury. I lost an inch of bone and my ankle was fused. 3 years of surgery and assisted walking without healthy eating habits the pounds packed on.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight never slowed my activity level. I do not have any health issues. The insecurity from the judgement and disrespectful comments has made me grow an unbreakable brick wall that I am chiseling at.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
My first over 100 pound weight loss was about 18 years old. I moved to Florida from Virginia. Leaving my childhood friends that I was comfortable with into a state where looks are more important was my turning point.
My 2nd over 100 pound weight loss got serious in about 2013. I was an Office Manager that fell in love with the 2 owners and decided to care more about her looks because I was lost in love feeling the change in look would get me noticed instead of overlooked as I felt.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
My first weight loss journey started slow with morning walks and after dinner bike rides. Smaller meals spread throughout the day.
My second weight loss journey was me cutting back on portions. I was working to much not eating enough. I was snacking small or not at all until one evening meal and gallon of water. My gym habit was already healthy. I am a first thing in the morning gym rat for life!
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
This question is hard. I notice changes in my body daily. I am a work in progress. I am looking for symmetry and tone. Just losing size and fitting in smaller sizes weighing less doesn’t get my attention. Seeing a rounder more firm muscle belly does! I have never tracked it.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
My only challenge is my own mind! Diet is the hardest for me. I love my fresh fruit, vegetables and water. However, I lack portion control and enjoy the preservatives/additives goodies. I’m still working on my balance.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I’ve NEVER wanted to give up! The gym is a lifetime commitment I consider to be the best part of my day everyday! In my school years I was an athlete. Being so physical I have always had a nice shape even obese and seeing that has kept me active. The nutrition I fight giving up on daily. So technically giving up on my diet is a daily struggle and my love for muscle symmetry keeps me going! -_-
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
My weight loss has generally been a slow consistent process of building muscle and tone burning body fat. The reason I had to lose it twice is because I almost lost my right leg making me unable to walk without assistance for 3 years. As soon as I became active again the weight was slowly coming off.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I would say my 100 pounds was lost in a 2 year window on both my weight loss journeys.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
My entire weight loss has been a no scale victory. I just look in the mirror. I’ve weighed myself periodically knowing my most in numbers was over 300 and least in the 160’s. My body fat has been as low as 10% in my 20’s. Currently I went from a 3X Size 26 to Medium Size 10.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I graze on fruit and trail mix during the day. No fast food or gas station snacks. ONLY drink my gallon of water and ruby red grapefruit juice NOT from concentrate. Dinner all vegetables, fish, shrimp, grapefruit and carrot cake. I would stop at multiple fast food places in a row as the obese Amber.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My physical activity besides not walking for the 3 years has always been above average.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Lift weights to burn fat and build symmetry. Depending on your vanity level just losing the fat will never satisfy you. Also muscle burns fat all day!
- Begin your day with a physical activity before your first meal.
- ONLY drink water and a gallon or more daily. Carry a gallon jug to measure. Seeing the whole gallon makes me drink mine.
- Healthy routines. Don’t have it in your house to eat! Keep a healthy trail mix and fruit with you to avoid last minute hunger pains stopping you at unhealthy food destinations for a quick snack!
- Consistency. Don’t deprive yourself. I eat goodies in moderation. However, I eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Drink warm tea’s and Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother to flush your system after every meal!
