WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was my heaviest, 138 lbs., when I was 47 years of age.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was never really excessively overweight, so it didn’t really affect my life.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
When I turned 51 I decided I wanted to get into the best shape of my life. Not just lose weight, but gain muscle.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
In February 0f 2013, I signed up for an on-line training a nutritional program. It was at that time I picked up weights for the first time in my life.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I saw results almost immediately.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The biggest challenge I faced was lack of support from family & friends. They couldn’t understand why I brought my food to luncheons & family functions in Tupperware. Once I make my mind up to do something I commit to it 100%.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Once I saw results I got excited & actually wanted to keep going. It wasn’t until about a year into my regime of healthy eating & working out 6 times a week that I started to get frustrated with the process. I am an ectomorph and building muscle is very difficult for us. I also suffered a rotator cuff injury, which kept me from training for about 6 weeks. Once I started back I had to take it easy. I still have issues with it from time to time & have to take it easy.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
My weight went down to 109 lbs. in November of 2013. I felt that I was too thin at that point. My goal was to get fit & gain some muscle. I decided to change coaches & started eating even more “clean” food to gain some muscle. Within 6 months my weight went up to 118 lbs. but I was lean – very little body fat.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes Definitely. I’m happy to say that currently my weight is 125 lbs. which is one lb. less than when I started my fitness journey in February of 2013, BUT my body is a completely different shape. No more belly fat or flab. I am now lean & muscular.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I used to eat 3 meals a day. Now I eat 6 clean meals a day. I am eating a lot more food than I ever did, but it is a proper balance of Proteins, carbs & fats.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I NEVER worked out. Currently I work out 6 days a week. 5 Days of weight training & I day Kettlebells training & NO CARDIO.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Never give up. Trust the process. Even if you don’t think changes are happening – they are!!! For a time I felt there was no progress. My weight did not change for about 6 months. In January of 2015, we were heading down south and I tried my shorts on from the previous summer. They didn’t fit – they were too tight. Although, my weight didn’t change, my glutes had grown from all the squats.
