WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I’ve been obese since the age of 7yrs old.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was always bullied at school, was looked at and treated different than the majority of the students. I couldn’t do the same things other kids could do, I had no energy to play and have fun like the other kids growing up, couldn’t do things like ride roller coasters or have any normal fun as a child.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
When I was 19, I realized that I had hit 300lbs while being only 5ft and 1in tall. Seemed way too unreal and I felt disgusted in myself.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
No diets or exercise would ever help, obesity was a disease that has ran in my family for decades. I played tennis religiously from the age of 5 to 15 and still gained an abundance amount of weight over those years. I decided at the age of 19 to have WLS, a tool to help start my weight loss and maintain once I lost it.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Immediately, this tool has helped me lose weight and maintain it.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I never liked exercise and I love food. That still hasn’t completely changed. Being able to keep up with exercising has made me grown to enjoy working out. But I still love food just the same. However, I changed the types of food that I love. I love more healthy choices now than I did before.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Definitely. Weight loss is such a mind game. Most days I feel like I see very little progress from where I started from and think that I’ve failed myself. I reminisce on my before photos and compare them to me now, I remember how much hard work I’ve put into changing my life and tell myself I can’t stop here, I still have to keep going.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Of course, plateaus are inevitable. I stuck to my diet plan and worked out harder, changed my eating habits and workout plans in case my body had gotten used to what I was doing. Eventually I’d start to see changes again and kept going!
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I started my journey 1.5 years ago and lost the most of it my first year.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Fitting on roller coasters, being in “onederland”, and I actually weigh less than I did in ELEMENTARY school! I remember being weighed at a little physical exam my 6th grade year, they announced my weight of 189lbs to the whole class. I weighed much more than the average student. I now weigh LESS than that.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I stick to protein and veggies, I’ve limited carbs and sugars. I used to eat anything and everything before and now I know what my body needs.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I have much more energy, great stamina, and able to do a good amount of exercise before losing my breathe.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Never give up no matter how hard it gets or how much you want to. It gets easier as you go.
- Support is key, whether it be family and friends, or complete strangers that are going along the same journey as you.
- Keys to weight loss are 80% and 20% exercise. Changing your diet is the biggest change to overcome.
- Healthy recipes and alternative foods will be your best friend. “Indulging” in certain foods can be easier when there’s a lower sugar or carb recipe of what you love.
