128 Pounds Lost: Mom, you have a big belly

NAME : Sandy / BEFORE WEIGHT : 272.4 / AFTER WEIGHT : 154 / POUNDS LOST : 128
Sandy Lost 128 Pounds

As a former over the road truck driver, I gained my weight sitting idol for days on end.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?  Though I had no high blood pressure (it is genetically low) I was pre-diabetic with a 6 on my A1c blood tests. My ankles hurt and I had surgery on both feet due to plantar fascitis. I’m sure that my weight exasperated the problem.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?  When my son said,”Mom, you have a big belly”. It hurt my feelings.
I would loose weight on every diet I tried, but it all came back with a vengeance. I needed a fix, not a bandaid for my weight.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?  My mother, aunt, and sister-in-law all had RNY surgery. My aunt gained all of hers back. But my mother had lost 130# and had kept it off for over 10years. I discussed options with my doctor. He sent me to a local hospital’s bariactric meeting. My insurance that I thought was great would not pay for it. My internet research lead me to Mexico Bariatric Center. My husband and I attended a seminar in Tulsa, OK. He talked to the surgeon for an hour before the seminar began. He was sold (as was I) that this was my answer. We paid our deposit and booked a surgery date.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?  As I stated, loosing weight was never the issue, keeping it off was. I saw a 15# loss in pre-op 2 week diet to shrink my liver. After surgery the scale would keep inching down. There are stalls (no weight loss) every two weeks for me. I know that is the way my body is responding and adjusting so I am not surprised every other week when it happens.
I usually work out in my jacuzzi 5-6 night a week with 5# weights. I gradually worked up from no weights, to 3#, now 5#. When I do not work out with the routine that I have created for myself, my weight slows immensely.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?  Being tired. I am a night owl by design and when I have to get up early for work I don’t want to work out at night. Why not do my workout during the day?, Because I do it in the nude! Just Me and the stars.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?  No! I never wanted to give up after seeing the results. I weigh almost daily to hold myself accountable for my actions. That way I know what I need to do/change if I see a pound or two increase.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?  I just hit my longest stall of 10 days. I can blame it on Halloween, but no. I stuck that candy corn in my mouth. But yesterday was Thanksgiving and I remained true to my cause, me.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?  7.5 months. I figure I have one month to go to loose the last 10#.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?  My first one was when my stomach no longer touched the steering wheel on my vehicle. The second one was when I had cleared out my closet of size 26/27/4x clothing and donated or gave it to a resale shop.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?  Protein, protein, protein. Low carbs (trying to balance out low carbs and high protein is no easy task and I suggest having a PHD in astrophysics to figure it out). I don’t eat corn, pasta, potatoes and very little fruit. I try my eat tuna, salmon, turkey, beans, Premier shakes with mocha Mio drops in it, and other foods higher in protein. Though bread is high in carbs I eat just very small amounts of it on occasion.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?  Before weight loss, I wore a FitBit and walked 6 miles daily. Today I have dropped the walking regime for the jacuzzi workout. My body has responded well to it. I also purchased a Nordic Track ski machine for $10.00 from my local varage sale!
