I always struggled with my weight. I felt I had control around 18 years of age. After having children and becoming a single mom of two babies, I ballooned over the next 20 years.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?  I developed sleep apnea, causing me to have Afib. I was hospitalized 3 times with abnormal heart arrhythmia. I also had high blood pressure.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?  It sounds corny, but I had a dream that I was dating Jon Seda as the character in the movie Selena. I watched it earlier that day. I woke up and had my “a ha” moment. This dream combined with my worry I might have a stroke and die, I decided it was time to not only lose weight, but to someday have a relationship again after not dating for 20 years. My kids were now grown, and it was time.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?  I talked my friend into joining Curves, and I taped every episode of Dr. Oz, watching his shows faithfully every night after working and working out. I put together my clean diet from all his ideas.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?  The first 4 months I lost 50 pounds. The next 75 took about 2 more years. I still have another 60 to 75 to go.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?  Eating healthy was expensive at first, but I started eating almost the same thing everyday, and it actually got to be affordable. I felt I was going through a sugar and preservative withdrawl. I knew it was like being an addict so I fought hard not to give in. Some nights I would go to bed early just so I wouldn’t cheat.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?  I never did. In my mind there was no turning back.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?  Absolutely. I think in 2014 I lost only 25 pounds. I still do often.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?  50 in four months, then 75 in two years.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?  I remember buying two $50 tops at a plus size clothing store, because it was the only tops that would fit me. They were 30 & 32s. Now I can even fit in some size 16 clothes. Also, I went from 5x to XL. I’m also off all my meds after my heart Dr told me my heart checkup went well. I haven’t had an Afib attack in about 2 years.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?  Clean eating now compared to processed and sugar foods. I eat small meals 4 to 5 times a day. I used to eat huge meals often before.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?  I am much more active. I hit 17,000 steps yesterday. I now work out at the Y taking 3 Zumba classes a week, along with a body sculpting class. I walk my dogs for about an hour every night. When the weather is cooler, I walk even more. I also try to incorporate some 30 minute circuits at Planet Fitness. Not bad for a person who used to get winded walking a block.


  1. Clean Eating
  2. Small 4 to 5 meals
  3. Exercise often.
  4. Have one or two cheat meals (but not ridiculous)
  5. Get enough sleep (7 hours for me if possible)
